Title: Canker Resistant Apples
Post by: real food on February 02, 2006, 19:25:29
??? The worst problem for Apples in the GLASGOW Area, is CANKER. I am looking for information on varieties of Apple that are KNOWN to be resistant to Canker. Does anyone have this information or can you point me in the right direction?

Dug through notes on resistant varieties:
Bramley’s Seedling, Grenadier, Discovery, Annie Elizabeth, Falstaff,  Laxton’s Superb,  Egremont Russett, Newton Wonder, Lane’s Prince Albert.
Of these, have only grown Bramleys Seedling which is a cooker and not too bad in a wet area.
Hope this helps.

:)Thanks for  the information which mostly matches what I have gleaned from various sources.
However, it is a pity that this information is not widely known, as it would stop a lot of money and years being wasted on trying to grow unsuitable varieties of apples for the local conditions.
A well known fruit catalogue is still selling apple varieties as suitable for the North, even though they are known to be very prone to canker.
