Congtats on your first pile!
Wish I could find some. Will start scanning the local paper as that worked for you.

That really is good. Our local farm charges £21 a ton and the last lot we got was full of stones. :(

We've found a riding school near us who are more than happy for us to take away their manure for free!  :)
Although we had to hire a tipper truck to get it to the allotment, so it wasn't entirely free.

Here's a handy website which lists sources of manure all over the UK:

(links are about half way down on the right)

We have found a farm who gives it away free too. You just take your trailer into the field and help yourself. My husband unhooked the trailer, wheeled it into the field, shovelled it full, then had to wheel it back out with the wheels in a few inches of mud. He's still taking the pills...
Amazing thing is - it goes absolutely nowhere. It looks loads, then goes on the plot and looks a tiny amount.
I'm going to look at that site and see if I can add this farm to it, 'cos it's invaluable if you don't mind a broken back

Anyone know anywhere in Cambridgeshire? Going to try to find more than one source as there's enough of us to order lots and experiment.

Bupster - we had a long thread on the bulletin board at work about this, oddly enough.

The following places may deliver locally, if you order a trailer full

http://www.monachfarm.co.uk/

and possibly madingley mulch - http://www.mulch.co.uk/

Someone said the farmer in Knapwell, near the church, was offering delivery of trailerloads, or free to callers.

There are stacks of places which sell bags for 50p or so from the farm gate. The shetland pony sanctuary in Landbeach does, for example. I'm not sure you'd want to cycle home with a bag of manure, though?

Near me, there's a farm in Abington which sells large bags (with straw rather than wood shavings) of horse manure and one in Hadstock. My kids think the idea of buying horse poo and bringing it home in the car is absolutely hilarious - almost worth the 50p just for the laugh.

Thanks, Ceratonia, I have visions of a bike with the basket and panniers stuffed full of manure  :D

Where on earth do you work?

Where on earth do you work?

We design silicon chips  :-\ Surprisingly large number of people at work who grow their own veg, keep chickens etc.

Forgot to mention the following site, for those who want to order a ton of cow manure over the internet. I wonder what happens if you're not at home and have to go and collect it from the sorting office?

Hi.  My allotment is in Brighouse, not far from Hudddersfield.  We used to get some free from a farm in Huddersfield, but now someone brings some to the allotment for us.  even better!
