Title: Peace to all men...............
Post by: tim on January 25, 2006, 06:58:13
I know that I showed this 'across the road' yesterday, but I thought it good enough to repeat? I'm really rather pleased.

Just for once the camera beat my handshake on full zoom so that you can actually make out the subject!!

Hi all,  :D
Looks like a greater spotted woodpecker to me, a male, the female does not have as much of a red patch on it`s nape. This is a woodland bird ,not as common as the green woodpecker & a good bit smaller. We do get them in the garden quite regularly, once or twice a week.
                                                                           Adrian.

Spot on, Adrian.

Not often possible to get close enough. That is 30ft away through the kitchen window.

That is a super photograph.  GS Woodpecker seeing off a Starling.  Who won Tim?   Both look aggresive and not pleased at all.

;) ;) ;) ;)

What a brillant photo, i did not even see the Starling at first. I sometimes get the wood peckers in the garden, but have not seen any yet this year.

I get greater spotted drumming in trees nearby every year, but have never seen one on the site. We do get a few green woodpeckers, which I'm not keen on as they sometimes learn to open beehives in winter and clean out the contents, destroying the colony and badly damaging the woodware.

What a great picture, Tim - and how nice to see you here again.  Forgive my ignorance - but what's "across the road"?

Great photo Tim. We get a spotted woodpecker on the nuts in the garden but I dont know the difference between a greater or lesser spotted. Can anyone assist re identification as my book tells me the lesser spotted is slightly smaller....great if you have them both together at the same time?
Chris

We had a greater spotted on the bird table outside my classroom window today - first one I have seen at school despite it being rural and there being a few trees around.  Needless to say, lessons stopped for a while.  My enthusiasm is definitely catching on with the rest of the class  :D

chriszog - the lesser spotted is a lot smaller - about sparrow sized (the great spotted is starling sized).  More details on this site:  http://garden-birds.co.uk/
The one you see in your garden is almost certainly a great spotted - the lesser spotted is much rarer.

Carol - regrettably, this 'pecker's a wimp! He left - not for the first time. Hence quite difficult to catch him.

Juliet - another garden site that some a4aers visit.

Lesser spotted is also decidedly uncommon, while greater spotted is found everywhere there are woods. Unless you're sure, it's a great spotted!
