Title: For Jenny, and other early birds
Post by: Georgie on January 24, 2006, 18:08:54
Spotted this in today's Guardian and was reminded of our convo the other night.

'The UK will no longer be shaken from sleep by the familiar but rousing strains of the unofficial national anthem.  After more than 30 years, Radio 4 is ditching the UK Theme - a collision of Danny Boy, Scotland the Brave, Men of Harlech, Rule Britannia and What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor? - in favour of a news bulletin and extended shipping forecast at 5.30am.

The musical cocktail, arranged by Fritz Spiegl, an Austrian-born composer, has been broadcast since 1973 to signal the switch from the World Service to Radio 4.'

A public website with petition is 'live' according to this morning's 'Today' programme. The topic is listed under 'listen again' at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/today/
I would post the link to the protest website, but can't listen again as this computer is silent :P! Can anyone else oblige with the link please? ::)
