Title: Sunflower stakes
Post by: amanda21 on January 23, 2006, 16:43:33
I've been given a packet of sunflower seeds (Giant Single) but I don't have any fences or sheds to grow against.  Before I even think about sowing them will a bamboo cane or wigwam of sorts be enough to hold them up on the allotment once they become 'Giant'?  Cheers

Yes, but think big - last year I found myself "extending" bamboos by taping two together to give me more height. Sunflower hadn't read its packet......  ;D

People on my site use bamboos successfully. What's the tallest sunflower? I remember coming across a website that sold an extra tall one but I'm not sure which site it was.

Mine got to 9 feet last year and did not need a stake even on a exposed site..
The stems were thick enough to hold a house up at around 4inch in diameter!!!!
Is your site very windy ?

Thanks Guys.
Is my site windy? - not sure I've not had it long enough to find out yet.  I think I will sow a few when the time comes just to see.  ;D
