Title: Is anyone else out there worried ?
Post by: joji on January 20, 2006, 16:14:34
I was just wondering if anyone else out there is worried about sticking there location in the map?

It worries me because anyone can then see where you are located.

I won't be doing mine as my lottie is out the back of our house and I am worried that we might get broken into if we go away and the house is empty for a few days.

I like people knowing where it is. I haven't anything valuable there, and it's quite a secure site, and in any case it's only stuff. I might feel a little differently if it was out the back of my house, Joji, and I understand your feelings. Perhaps I'm a little too blasé about security - I find that being worried about security makes me feel insecure, so I've sort of gone off in the other direction :D

Took one look and thought "no way".

My pin is near, but not exactly over where we live.

My pin's at our allotment, not where we live. If it were otherwise I might well share your concerns.

Hi joji, Hi all,  :D

No I`m not worried.

I haven`t indicated where I live, just the location of my allotment site which is half an hour away. Anyone on this forum could probably find my plot from the clues I leave in my posts. (Sounds like a good game!!) I think if anyone was going to raid my plot they would do it without the aid of this map but they`d be poorly rewarded for their efforts.

I think it depends on individual circumstances on what we choose to reveal about ourselves online. We must all do what we think best. In your circumstances, Joji, your choices seem wise.

I find Google Earth fascinating but a little unnerving too when you can be looking at Los Angeles for instances on second and then zoom right into your own back garden the next.  I feel happier knowing it's not real time (ie they are photos taken a few years ago) and I have only plotted my allotment not my home.

I've put my pin on my allotment too. But I do share your view that Google earth is a little unnerving, Amanda.  If it were ever to be shown in real time that would be absolutely scary. There's a programme on Google on BBC 2 in about 5 minutes. I'll be watching it. It is a little scary how powerful Google may become!

What worries me more is how many people are prepared to show their date of birth on A4A. This is information often used to do security checks....

I had a look at the map & kept zooming in & eventually found our road - &, like Plocket, thought "no way".  I don't have an allotment, only a garden, so the only location I could give is our house, & I'm not putting that on the internet.  I did think maybe I'd put my pin in the middle of Cambridge (my nearest town) though as it's interesting when you click on someone's profile to see where they are, even if it's only a rough location (or am I just nosy?!).

PS have now placed my pin, & no, I don't actually live on a roundabout in the middle of the A14  ;)

For goodness sake stop being so paranoid! It's interesting to the gardeners on here knowing the whereabouts of your activities but if you have a fear of someone coming along to nick your sprouts you don't have to stick the pin in your back garden. Stick it half a mile away, at least other gardeners get an idea of your climate etc. Common sense an' all that?

Since I am one of the Americans that come here frequently, I went ahead and pinned my plot. If someone wants to find it, they are welcome to it. I would love having visitors! I understand why you wouldnt want to let anyone know where your allotment is though... when i was looking at the map I was amazed at the sheer numbers of allotments there are. We don't have them here in the states... I think we would be better off if we did.

Anyway, greetings from the wet, dreary Pacific Northwest.
We, the moss people, salute you.

If you are worried, choose the neighbour you like least, and stick the pin in their garden !

I don't live in fear at all - but I've made the decision not to place a pin. That's all there is to it.

If I find a 'Dan' pin on my plot I'm back to the UK with 1/2 a gallon of Jayes fluid....!
