At the Lincoln branch of Wilkos lots of fruit trees, peach, cherry, apple, pear, plum all
for the bargain price of £6.99!! I carried a peach tree home! I've grown figs, olives and the usual soft fruit from this store but never a tree.I'm I being over cautious because I've
not spent twenty quid on a fruit tree from a specialist supplier?Has anyone out there grown a Wilko fruit tree!!?? Does anyone out there grow a peach on their plot? Will it need protection? If anyone can answer any of these questions I will be very grateful!

Hello. Glad you've asked the question i nearly bought one myself.
Morrisons are doing a few shrubs and fruit such as gooseberry, raspberry, black and redcurrants for £1.29 at the mo'. Only small, but but should be good for next year...
If you're buying top fruit, you need to be aware of the rootstock, as this has a drastic effect on the size of the eventual tree. Apples are usually on either MM109 or M26. MM109 is fine for a large allotment but too big for a small garden, which M26 is too small for me - I'm getting so frustrated with a couple of mine I'm thinking of rooting them out and replacing them - but would be ideal for a small garden. Size is also affected by the variety, some being far more vigorous than others.
I've got a pear and an apple from aldi, both are have had no problems in the last 2 years

Do you know what rootstock they are on?
I ask because I've three apple trees myself, I got them last year and kept them in pots. I want to put them in the back garden soon.
The packets said nothing about rootstock... :(
They should have done. Plant them out and see how much they grow.

Thanks..... ::)
YEs I thought they had to state the rootstock on the labels? Mind you if the label's fallen off... ;D ;D
Just bought one of their cherry trees (along with loads of flower tubers, etc...) I bought a £6 plum tree from woolies about 9-10 years ago and from year 2 it has fruited amazingly well. I hope this cherry tree will be as good. As the plum tree, this one is an idea shape for training as a fan.
Oh and a 2.5kg growmore for £1... cannot go wrong.

I'll try & dig the labels out & have a gander
I have a Victoria plum and a Cambridge Gage, both of which are doing well. No friut last year since it was so cold at flowering time. Some of the apples are doing well, but I'm not happy with the pears at all. I bought them at a time when I didn't know anything much about top fruit, and I need to put some of my mistakes right.
I have a Concorde Pear bought from Woolies last spring for£7.99 - it's flourishing nicely and I hope to see some fruit this year.
Concorde's a good one, it follows on from Conference, so if you grow both you get similar pears over a longish season.

HELLO,
Thanks for your comments. I've found out that peach trees are grafted on to
St Julien A rootstocks and to get best results to grow in a greehouse or as a fan on a south facing wall.As my greenhouse is too small for the tree it will have to take a chance in the big wide world of my allotment! When I took the plot on 6 years ago I had and still have an orchard with mature plums, apples, pears, cherries, and damsons so the peach will get some protection and the lottie site is a sun trap so any fruit may ripen.(heres hoping!)BTW MATT
when your new cherry gets to fruiting size net it or you will get very fat starlings, blackbirds, crows etc but you will be lucky if you taste a single cherry!!

I will thanks. I need to create a good support structure as it's an ideal shape for a fan. its easier to net that way too... I don't want the cherries to go the same way as my blueberries did (for the first) time this year :(

If people have had success with Woolies trees, I may try them.
I saw the Wilko fruit trees in the Nottingham branch last week. There wasn't a great choice but I was tempted. I was put off by the lack of any detailed growing/aftercare instructions but they were cheap enough to take a chance on - although I didn't!
i have bought lots of trees from both woolies and wilkos in past years-as we arent moving house again ,i shall buy some more this year!
still the people wot bought outr houses in the past will be benefititing now!
i think wilkos are excellent-where have you got a lottie angle?there are one or two of us in lincoln.........

;D I just bought Apple Golden delishious £4.99. Lemon £3.99. and Rasberry £1.99. Good old Wilko.
Any tips on keeping them alive most welcome. ;D as they don't give much detail to care. :-\ :)
Apples and raspberries just need planting out, though I don't know how well Golden Delicious will bear in our climarte, it doesn't have the best of reputations. Lemons aren't hardy, and I've no experience of them.
Roy,
I bought a lemon tree in November 2004 - it was about a foot high and had lots of developing fruit on it. I potted it up and left it outdoors in a sheltered spot. It seemed totally oblivious to the weather. It's been covered in blossom and has yielded a good crop of lemons so far. It has put on around 6" of growth over the past year and continues to flourish.
Good luck!
That's very encouraging news Amazin thank you, ;) although the weather temps are a bit chillier here than London :-\ fingers crossed, I'll keep you informed of its progress. ;D

That's OK, there was nowt on 'em anyway!! (believe me, I looked!)
Update on wilko fruit trees, the price has gone down to a fiver a tree!!
Thats it then, I'm off to the store, £5 has GOT to be good.
Never been to Wilkos before today, glad I did.
Ended up buying loads of stuff including the £5 fruit trees - 2 pear trees & 2 peach trees. Also 3 gooseberry, 3 roses and 4 other shrubs. All at good prices, although the roots on the trees seem to have been cut quite severely after lifting, so will have to stake them for a bit I think, and some of the trees looked better than others - I got them all off the stand and looked at them - so I chose the best ones they had.
The trays are good value too - 40p for 'Stewart' brand black gravel tray (seed tray that needs the holes knocking out) and 30p for half seed trays.
does anyone know where I can find out details of what wilkos stock? It does sound promising, but I don't want to have to drive a long way for nothing...
Also, I am sure that I remember reading that someone was heading down to wilkos to buy asparagus crowns - does anyone know anything about htis?
thnaks
Hi all,
I don`t have a Wilkos near enough :(
But ... I did get a single perfect golden delicious apple from a newly planted bargain tree last year :D
Unfortunately ... I pulled the spur off when I picked it :(
I also got a single pear from a woolies tree, delicious ;D
Just pop your bargain trees not too deeply in a hole with a dash of Blood, Fish and Bone and stake the bottom, and wait. They seem to come good.
Col
Didn't see any asparagus at the Wilkos I went to. In the way of fruit they had apple, pear and peach trees, gooseberry, blackcurrant, redcurrant, kiwi, olive, lemon, orange, blueberry, raspberry, strawberry.
For interest I show a picture of the trees I bought, you can see the roots, for reference there is an 18" ruler by them:
