Post by: return of the mac on January 18, 2006, 19:33:34

Well I have my tatties on order, soon to be delivered I hope.  Wont plant them until March/April depending on the state of the ground.  I want to start sowing some seeds next month, some directly into the ground if it's not too wet and some in pots.  I still have beds to dig at the lottie as this will be my first year there.

No polytunnel or greenhouse, so broadies and rhubub in outside December, asparagus January (small pause for marmalade), then in Feb seed fingers will get seriously itchy, bedrooms dark and chitty chilly, and windowsills full. Someone (no names) says she has four true leaves on her tomato plants NOW :o, and more peeps out there have peppers in. I have given in and ordered a cold frame for reasons of Morale:P. You're not alone mac ...  ;D

I'm dying to be planting/sowing something, but holding off for now. I have a nicely planned list somewhere to say what I'm allowed to sow when  :) Going to start with some more broadies outside some time in Feb, and also some caulis and possibly aubergines indoors.

I already have most of my seed spuds (bought direct from local GC) and am very tempted to try a few Lady Crystl under fleece again perhaps at the end of Feb.

March is when I really intend to get going (if the ground is dug by then ::)) with some carrots (under a 5l bottle cloche - an experiment), early peas, more spuds, toms indoors.

How I wish for a cold frame  ;D

I have sown some leeks in a washing up bowl and they are on a windowsill - not a great deal just a few to be ready a bit earlier that normal.  I am working on the assumption that the showers plant theirs now because they want them big.  I will be harvesting this lot at normal size.

For me it is much to early to plant outside already. It is too wet and I expect we will  get some cold time.

Toms and peppers late next month for me, peas in guttering in the greenhouse early March, broad beans outside under fleece on ground warmed by polthene and then away you go. At last ;D

OK I am not a shower ::) but have started leeks, onions (Brunswick and Spring) and Broads beans in pots.  the broad beans are in the shed and the rest are in modules in the bathroom window.

I am planning to start lettuce, beetroot and turnips at the end of February.  I tried Turnips in modules last year and I had more success with them than i ever did when tilling straight to the ground (I have thick clay >:( ) and it dries out on top so quickly that seeds really don't stand a chance.

So i am also going to germinate as many seeds as possible before introducing them to the soil.

Could some kind person let me know how long it takes most carrots seeds to germinate.  I will need to know so that I can gauge when to start them on the kitchen paper so that i am around when they are ready to go into the ground.

many thanks

Bill

just flowers (my true love) just yet - no veg for at least another month then probably broad beans in first. Last year, got very carried away and all window sills tables and most other empty spaces were filled with seedlings for AGES. This year, less haste, no family homicides

Got my early and salad potatoes 10 days ago and they are chitting away happily.
Gave in today and planted some peas (Fortune) in the cold frame, and some sweet peas in heated propagator - as recommended on packet. Then had some spare space in propagator so put in some aubs - have been meaning to wait till February but......
Tomorrow will sow some lettuce, mixed leaves and rocket in the cold frame.
Also have to confess that last week I planted out some cauliflower seedlings. I planted the seeds in modules in mid October in my cold frame - they now have 5 -6 leaves on and getting too big for the modules and don't really want to pot them on. Went to the lottie today - 1 has not survived, rest look fine. They are under enviromesh. Still have some spares in the cold frame. Worth a try putting them out I thought!
