Introduction............Hi ........I'm Moudie and have had an allotment at Allers in East Kilbride near Glasgow for about 12 years.Anyone else on the forum from the Glasgow area?
Yep I am but have now lived in Embra for about 25 years. Sad fate for a Weegie! :'( :-[
i'm also a weegie ;D but i don't have a lottie :(
I'm half weegie , does that count?
Good enough for me Vez ;D
Hi Moudie - I'm in Edinburgh (willingly!) but originally from Caithness so no Glasgow connection - BUT I did spend time in Hairmyers Hospital East Kilbride many long years ago :D
Hey Wicker! That was just my silly sense of humour. :-[I chose to live in Edinburgh. I love living in Edinburgh and in fact I can think of few cities where I'd rather live.
Mmmmmm... maybe Venice ??? ;D ;D ;D ;D
hi moudie,
im in gartocher road in the east end of glasgow. 5 mins drive from the weans school. i've had my plot just over a year and feel im winning the battle to de- junglify it!!
I have to dejunglify my plot every spring...........well the wife does most of it as she actually enjoys weeding ??? :-X
What is a Weegie???? never heard that in Reporting Scotland, have I?
Live in the Borders.
Glas weegie an ;D ( an Edinburgh insult I believe ;))
They love us weegies really :P
Only 2 types of weegies- norweigans and glasweigans- i should put that on wikipedia :D
Both of my parents and most of my family hail fae glasgow- i was born in wick and live in aberdeen- got an allotment in hilton
Too right they'd better love us weegies. There's an awful lot of us in Embra. ;)
Hi there. Another newbie here based in Hillington (just along the M8 from weegieville).
No allotment, but a 20'x20' (west facing) back garden just begging to be turned into one (i hope that allows me to stay on your board ::) )
Once the shed is up, i intend to get out there and put some hard work in to turn my nice and solid clay into a something marvellous.
So while I'm here, a question about well rotted manure ..... where can i find some ? Any suggestions gratefully received.
Local farms and riding stables. Sometimes you get ads in Post Ofiice, local free paper, evening paper etc.
thanks for your suggestion. i've already advised "heem" that we're going for a drive on sunday and hopefully by then the shed base will be complete and the empty hardcore sack will be strategically placed in the back of the car.
my poor car thought it was a sports model when it was born. i shifted four loads of tree last weekend and now manure. i think i would probably do better with a van. ;D
You could do to start a compost heap as soon as you can too. You can put all your vegetable and fruit peelings, egg shells and teabags and coffee grounds in it as well as garden rubbish. When it all rots down it is great for enriching the soil.
There are loads of folk on this site who don't have allotments: a garden or even window-boxes are just as good. I think the main requirement is being passionate about growing things. :) :) :) :)
oh, i have a dalek already and it's about half-full but it's not doing anything wonderful that i can see. i keep prodding it and occasionally watering it, but i'm trying to persuade "heem" (again) to stand akimbo and do his wee-ing thing to help the pile along. :P i think the dalek is going to have to make way for the shed though, so it would be a good time to empty and refill.
i was off sick yesterday and desperate to get out and have a dig but made do with washing loads of pots off ready for sowing. No point digging over anything until i've got the shed up as everything will just get trodden down again in the process and the final position of my veggie beds are largely dependant on which side of the garden the shed ends up.
i wish i was handier with a saw though. :P
the one thing that i'm worried about most though is the lack of sun :o i'm an exile, and have been living up here for a couple of years now and haven't seen any sun since i moved. well, not strictly true but only the odd day here and there which worries me. Don't think Alan T did a bit on the long, grey and very damp season in this particular gardener's year.
and my mate to lives over east made me so jealous with being snowed in. we only got a light sprinkling which was gone in a day. we just get grey :-\
thanks for listening to me waffle. and thanks for your help.
;D
HI EVERYONE, Im a weegie too, but now living in N.Ireland. Is it just me or are we an adventuring lot? and can someone please tell me...IS GLASGOW EMPTY YET? ;D On a serious note, I really miss rolls'n fritters and the great variety of shops, what does everyone else miss? ;)
the patter ;)
I forgot about that one, (been away too long, 24yrs) although the patter's nearly as good here (but just not quite) ;D ;D ;D
OH just remembered Big pickles out of the chippie in THORNWOOD DR, PARTICK, GLASGOW. you lot must think I think of nothing but food. OK I'll admit it I'm on a diet, thats why I'm hoping to grow fruit and veg this year.
Wow! I used to go there too!
;D ;D ;D ;D
Hi Moudie
Born and brought up in London but moved to West Lothian 37 years ago. Don't have an allotment, but love playing in the garden and come onto this site for a chat and meet super people.
aha!remember me?
i have always fancied a trip to glasgow-tell me three things to lure me there(and it cant be 3 chipshops!!!!)
kitty
Easy peasy: Art galleries, Citizen's Theatre, Provand's Lordship, GFT Rose Street, Gallowgate, Ubiquitous Chip, Burrell Collection... pfahh this is getiing boring. 8) 8)
Hi kitty ,sorry it took me so long to get back to you I kept getting kicked off line, but thats another thread! 1st Victoria Park, Whiteinch, the flowerbeds are to die for, the fossil grove (the trees are millions of years old) is facinating, and dont forget to take a picnic basket with you, and feed the ducks and swans your leftover crusts (still cant keep off the subject of food), 2nd the Glasgow arts festival, (beginning of May every year) theatres and a great night life, and 3rd the transport museum, takes you back in time . this is only the tip of the iceberg but I promise you you will be sorry to leave if you do decide to go as the people are the friendliest in the world(now I'm homesick, WHY did I leave again???). :-\ :-\ :-\
murder capital of europe ? litter everywhere ? gang culture ? major drug problems ? god forsaken grey sky that never clears ? pot holes in the road that would swallow a transit and leave no trace ?
but i love it :P
Don't know where you've been Mrs KP but it bears no ressemblance to the Glasgow I know and love.
Scotch-Mist how could I have missed out Victoria Park ::) I grew up within a spit of it!
i think i must read too many newspapers ::) . But the potholes i can vouch for :'(
Still love the place though, and I STILL feel i can walk the streets safely, which is one of the major reasons i moved up here (and will not move back south).
But if i could just ask for one thing, a very little thing .... can we have some sun please and can those westerlies drop just a tad.
;D
Grawrc, would you mind if I sent you a personal message I grew up within a spit of Victoria pk and would like to speak to an old neighbour (all this reminiscing has gotten me homesick)
Go for it Scotch-Mist. I was VP gardens South (NE side of the park)
sent a Pm , did you get it (I got kicked off line again) dont know whats going on ??? ??? ???
Come to Aberdeen instead ;D . We have the Ashvale, scottish fish and chip shop of the year for umpteen years until they retired gracefully- we also have a beach and greeeat winter gardens (better than glasgows ;) ).
Hey wheres my avatar >:( that was my greatest picture ever.
naw you dont want to go there, the further north you go the more they squeek ;D ha ha ha , no offence meant mac , stick to Glasgow , patter's better too. ;)
None taken- if you ever see a guy with a helium cannister under his arm its me ;D
But go Aberdeen!!!!
;D ;D ;D That wasn't the end I meant squeaked, have you never heard the expression (the further north you go the tighter the Scots get ?) or (so tight they squeak when they walk), anyway my Granda was a Highlander and Iam immensely proud of him as appart from the fact he was the greatest he also fought in the 2 world wars .
Scotch-mist I got your pm. Did you get mine. A bit p***sed late on last night so might not have sent it. :-[ :-[
Return Aberdeen's cool. i've got great mates from round there and my nephew's at Uni there too.
Yeh well im skint so i have an excuse for being tight :D
The other week i found a hand at the beach too, :o
Know the skint feeling mac, on the up side it makes you a better scounger, just scrounged 2 lorry loads of road curbs today to fill my yard, and did the hand have any money in it ? THOUGHT OF THE DAY: WHO TOOK IT OFF TO GET THE MONEY?
No, i called the cops and they used the hi tech aberdonian method of....
...poking it with a stick, then telling me, "yes thats a hand"
Yuuuuk, didn't that make you feel like pocking them with a stick just to see if they were still alive?
The're not much brighter here (if they had 2 braincells between them they would only fight).
Mrs KP I'm with you on the potholes, however sunshine is not lacking in Glasgow unless there has been a massive climate change.
I used to visit my sister in Edinburgh and freeze in wind and overcast skies when in Glasgow we had been basking in bikinis in the back garden.
Now I'm used to Edinburgh I find it OK but by comparison Glasgow is positively torrid. although there is plenty of rain. >:(
Rotm I'd have expected : have you had a hand in this? ;D
Anyway I think in all decency you need to tell us more about this hand and what ensued??

how strange, my two pals who live over east always have better weather than me ::)
had a lovely day yesterday, hoped it would carry over to today and lo and behold, fog first thing, followed by nasty cold damp with the occasional drizzle today. got a fair bit done yesterday but not as much as i'd have liked.
Sounds like Embra. Must be climate change. Global warming..... Aaarrrggh
It was bones, adult hand, no money in it though, and it was near the beach but too far to have been washed up- no news from the police, maybe i should tell the local paper? ???
Local police said: "HE is helping us with our enquiries."
ROTM replied: "Just giving them a hand..." ;)
Graw your worse than my bro for the non emergency police number- phoned him and he asked if i needed a hand, then he texted me all day with those cheesy jokes ::)
:D hi I'm not a weegie but live in weegie city and have a lotty at Kirklee! Lived here 20 yrs and love it!
we can wave across the water, i work in the Ibrox areea;D
i'd be interested in starting up a wee swap shop of ideas, as your microclimate is probably as similar to mine as i'm going to get, and we seem to get some strange weather around the clyde :P
has been lovely (but cold) the past few days, now i've booked Friday off work, it's bound to be hurricanes. Still i'll see if the runner bean frame holds up ;D
Rache! That off the Gt Western Road?
Yup go up Great western from where it meets Byres rd, heading out of the city to the next set of lights. Turn right and continue until the bridge going over the Kelvin and just before the bridge next to the Botanic gardens Arboretum is the lotty. Its twinned with Julian gardens alottments around the corner, which is posher.
the ground is still pretty frozen on the North of the clyde, did you get any snow? I work in thornliebank and there was some out that way.
All weggie tip swaps welcome ;D
think it was wednesday that it was there in the morning, but gone by the time i got back, then friday it flurried at work but nowt at home.
We're right on top of the hill at Hillington and it can blow a gale which is why i'm testing out my runner bean trellis with nothing growing yet.
i can get a spade in the ground but it's thick clay, so i'm in the middle of building some raised beds, ready for the off when i get back from a weekend away at the end of march. i've got two varieties of sweet pea coming along nicely, and some broad bean a tomatos but i've kept enough back that if nothing survives my breakaway i can start again.
looks like the ususal grey sky today, so situation normal again. ;D
I am going back up to God's country tomorrow :D
how is the forecast for Friday? im hoping to get a game of golf in ;)
Where you gonna be playing golf? Think its to be rain next few days, may be better on Fri. but doubt it. Better off east cost cos I think the West will be getting it more!!!
:D :D
i've got the day off work to do the plot, it's bound to rain.
;D
:-\ looks potentially dreich today
west side lol sods law,
Ill be working in Glasgow (bishopbriggs) tomorrow and Friday (morning is if I can wangle it) so I will be playing at East Kilbride or Motherwell.
I just checked the forecast and it says dry for Friday and sunny Saturday so there is hope :D
but it softened the clay up nicely and was mild enough to do an hour's digging after work, which i thoroughly enjoyed. it was very therapeutic ;D
