Title: Poor quality swedes
Post by: MikeB on January 15, 2006, 20:00:19
My swedes this last season were very poor quality, more like a sauage in shape and quite small.

Anyone, how do I grow good swedes?

Good question.

We talked about this earlier-re-how hard they were. I used to grow wonderful `Marrian`sp? when i had clay soil but now they are all `neck`-but another post said they had heavy clay and they were also `neck`

I have the same problem with mines as well. They're all long & some were pretty small ??? But the chap in the next plot were grew very big & round! Guess what? They didn't pull them out to eat. All leave it to the hens >:( >:(

i transplanted my swede seedlings in the spring (was given plants by a lottie neighbour, basically.
maybe they woud benefit from not being moved at all though - i.e. sow them where they are to grow, then thin out as appropriate

having said this, i have had about 50/50 success rate, with some being round and some others being just neck - and still tasty :)
