Looks like you've fallen on your feet there Amanda . A good choice of plot,  not a lot of perenial weed growth in the end nearest to the camera,  so I guess it must only have been given up in the autumn. If you wanted to save yourself the effort, I reckon you could just get away with digging out the big weeds and then skimming the rest with a good shovel.

Have fun

Lucky you Amanda!
I couldn't dig that much in an hour. But mine is clay and full of couch and docks. I met my neighbour for the first time today. She said my plot has been fallow for a least 5 years.

Amanda that looks great with lots of possiblities.  I love to see these before pics and then the afters,  it is amazing what can be achieved even in one season.  Try not to overdue it to start with,  you don't want to put your back out.  I believe you are supposed to dig for ten minutes then change activities for ten minutes etc etc, then you don't overdo it.   :) busy_lizzie

Oh believe me it was not continuous digging.....more like standing and gazing longingly over at all the other plots   :o.  I have just realised though that I have dug the two first beds the wrong way round ie East to West rather than North to South which I gather is preferable for the sun.  Never mind!  I might put some sweetpeas in them to act as a kind of barrier between the two half plots.  Was intending it to be potatoes but as I keep finding potatoes in the ground there I think I will dig another bed (noth-south!) for them further up.  We live and learn!  :-[

North / South beds are good if you want everything you grow to get the same amount of sunlight, but a couple of East /West ones can be useful too, for anything which likes a lot of sunlight or you want to start early (a south facing slope will get that little bit of extra sun). Things which you may want to have shaded by taller crops in the heat of the summer could then go on the north facing slopes.

I wish Doris P!!  Oh how I wish!  It's one of those houses you pass everyday and think I'd love to own that and then when it finally comes on the market you can't ring the estate agent because you've fainted on the floor at the price!   :-\

Your plot looks great! Enjoy the slog and keep taking photos. I didn't last year when I got my first plot so I know it's totally transformed but can't really remember exactly what it was like. I've got another one this year so I'll be sure to take photos of it. On the other side of the access path from my first plot and just below and to the north of the railway line. When I took it on it was shaded by trees on the railway embankment but they've all been cut doewn so the light will be much better than expected.
