Title: Autumn & Winter crops
Post by: francesbh on January 12, 2006, 19:27:32
I'm currently planning my allotment, and want to make sure that I've got some crops throughout the period October - March - has anyone got any suggestions as to what I could plant that will give a decent yield?  Ideally a few things that I can plant in August when I've harvested some summer crops and got extra space.

Many thanks

Savoy cabbage, sprouting broccoli, leeks, parsnips, celeriac, sprouts, kale.................... just for starters

leeks can follow on from your potatos, for instance. i started mine off in a pot in may i think, then transplanted in august (actually, i wanted to transplant in august, didnt get round to until mid-september)
they are now a small leek size - which is perfect as i dont like them mature.

cabbages are good, so is purple sprouting broccoli - but PSB needs a long growing season, whereas cabbage can be a 'follow-on' crop

Don't forget some over wintering onions if you have the space, I plant reds to harvest for those early summer salads ...

good call, derek - my reds have taken well. i also put my garlic in at the same time (november it was, i think) as i hope to be able to lift everything early-ish - my plot is small and i need the space for summat else later on. :)

I am fortunate there Svea in having plenty of space, but I still like to try and keep as much stuff going through the winter ...
