Title: If you go down to Wilko's today.......
Post by: JohnnyLarge on January 11, 2006, 18:57:37
You will find they have their seeds, sets and potatoes sets in.
I bought my first earlies yesterday. Pentland Javelin, £ 2.79 (ish) for 3kg. They are a nice size and lovely condition.
I pre-ordered my onion set at 4.30pm yesterday evening as they hadn't got them in yet. I got a phone call first thing this morning to say my order was ready.
1kg of Sturon, 1kg of Turbo.
If you have a Wilko's locall, try to pre-order. They do do it if you are polite!
John ;)

Yes, I am ready to buy my onion and red shallot sets, but they still haven't replenished their own label seeds, grrr! It makes sense to get the alliums though, as I can put the shallots into seed trays filled with compost in the greenhouse ...

Just to confirm, the price was £2.79 for the Pentland Javelin. The onion sets are 99p per 500g. Superb quality too.

Poundland have got their gardenign bits in locally.  They have the pack of six types of seeds.  Salad , veg and herbs.  Had a poke about and they seem quite full.  I think one of the packs had carrots, beetroot, cabbage, courgette and one other that was useful and another that was prob ok for swaps.  I think the salad one had spring onions, radish, cress (why ?), toms (moneymaker), cue (or was that moneymaker ?) and lettuce plus 1 other.  The herbs had flippin' rocket in it which I hate so I didnt get any.

got a bag of Pentland Javelin, some red onion sets (Brunswick) and some white ones (Stuttgarter)...

Also the Poundshop is selling fruit netting for 50p.  Its approximately 1.5M x 6M, not sure whether this is a good buy or not, but I got a couple of boxes.

Thanks mc, went into Poundland and found the netting and bought several boxes. ;D  Don't know if there were any at your local, but I also bought couple of 15x6ft Garden Canes for a quid each as well.  After going to Wilko at the same time, I need to stagger down to the shed on the lottie! ::)

I bought Turbo and Sturon onion sets at 99p for 500g of each, and they've also got fruit bushes, rhubarb, asparagus and globe artichokes, of  which I bought a pack of three for £1.50.  They're also having in stuff such as passionfruits and fig trees as well.  No potatoes though, which isn't a problem as I'm popping over to Ryton for mine.

Wilko is a real Alladin's Cave! :o ;D

okey dokey - I've visited Wilkos spent a fortune, but feel as if I've got some bargains and some good stuff, pots, onions (red and white), and some seeds, min/max thermometer (I dropped mine last year! :'()

Weather not great but doesn't it feel better when you can start to buy a few bits and bobs - spring feels imminent rather than yonks away :D

Went to my local Wilkinsons which is supposed to be the same firm as Wilcos.  No seed potatoes etc..   Went to Redditch  14 miles away.  Still no bargains as mentioned above.  Feel very deprived.  Has anyone had any luck near South Birmingham?

Picked up some turbo 1kg and red shallots 1kg. Poor availability of seeds though (grrr) so nipped down to Woolworths, no gardening stuff at all (grrr) so went to our market stall, no seeds in yet (grrr).

Such is life ...

I bought all my seed potatoes and onions last year from Wilko and they were all very good so recommend them.
Also, their packet seeds are on BOGOF at the moment. If you buy them in pairs putting the similar priced ones together you end up getting a very good discount. (If you buy them all together you only get the cheapest ones knocked off!)
Happy shopping!

TOP TIP!!!
If you can get the phone number of a Wilko's near you, you can pre-order stuff on the phone. They will save it for you to pick up instead of putting it all on the shelves.

Thanks for the tip, went down to Wilkos in Fareham and managed to get some onion sets, seed potatoes and some seed pack.   Also down there was various fruit canes, Rhubarb and Horseradish.

Going a little off topic (it relates to the seed potatoes I bought) I'm going to keep them in the dark until chitting time.    Can I break off any shoots that appear now safe in the knowledge that more will appear at the right time?

Cheers, Mark
