Has anyone out there got any experience of growing lemon grass ?
I quite fancy growing some on my kitchen windowsill. :'(
Any advice - and where do I get it from ?
Thanks,
Gill
Easy, this one, Gill, and it starts at your local g/grocers or s/market ;D...
Choose stems that have nodules at the base & stand them in a glass of water in good light (but not direct sunlight). When roots appear (bout a week or so) pot stems in 2/3 compost + 1/3 sand. You can grow them outside against a sunny wall for the summer.* Ease off watering beginning of autumn & then put them in a frost-free place late October-ish. (I bring mine indoors, but think a f-free greenhouse/shed will do).
Good luck! I've had mine going for 2 years now - Lishka
* Sorry, yes, still easy to grow on in the house if your 'sunny wall' faces inwards, so to speak... ;D
And do you break bits off it - or what?
Cleo & tm have done it too.
I cut them at/just below soil level - want to take the l/grass but leave the new nodules to re-form. Now got 3 healthy pots. Said it was easy 8)
do thye like split off i take it?? so from one nodule, you will gte like 5 stems?
I do. Great in home made lemonade! Isn't frost hardy tho, so be warned! I shall be starting a new batch any day now! :D
In lemonade, Emma? Never thought of that. So how do you make it?
Posted this recipe in the recipes 4 all site. Roll on summer!
Saw this yonks back on TV. Sophie Grigson was making it.
When you make home made lemonade, make a syrup up with ginger slices, crushed lemon grass stems, sugar and water leaving it to simmer gently for about 10 or so mins, then add the strained syrup to the juice of a couple of lemons and some fizzy water. I'm sure you could add the syrup to shop bought lemonade to make it extra special.
If it were me serving it with friends, I think I would fill a tall glass with ice, and stick in a stem of lemon grass, just for effect. Of course, if you were bunging something boozy in with the lemonade then the lemongrass would make an attractive swizzling stick.
It's really easy to grow from seed too.....but beware....chickens got in the greenhouse and ate the lot!!!!!!!!! 8)
