Title: Potatoes & Onions
Post by: Bun on January 03, 2006, 13:24:16
They are on sale now & I was wondering when I should be planting them.
January seems a bit early to me.  ???

You are right Bun. Potatoes generally from around mid to late march, onions about the same. So do not panic !

Well I contacted the people who I normally get mine from and they said sometime this month. So yup they must be starting to get in the shops now.

I would not plant though until mid march to mid april. Or a little earlier if you are in the south.

Ours came last month - as usual. But we still wait until March, when they are chitted, before planting. They know when they are ready!

Onion sets can go in almost any time, though I'd wait till the worst of the winter is over. If there;'s anyone in the Birmingham area who doesn't know already, there's a stall in the Bull Ring which sells both at a very good price, and always has a surprisingly good selection of potato varieties. They should have them in next month if not earlier.
