Title: Stray packages
Post by: wardy on January 03, 2006, 13:05:15
It's becoming apparent that us seed swoppers are having our packages "go missing".  It's happened to me twice recently and I've reported it to the Post Office who suggest getting a certificate of posting so you can claim compensation or replacement for items which go missing.  There is no track and trace on first and second class post.  I always put my address on any mail I send but I'm not sure how to make parcels look less attractive to thieves

Any posties on here with any suggestions?  :)

Save an envelope that a bill came in and send it in that!

Wardy. One of my packages went astray (A4A graphics I sent to a member) The annoying thing is I usually ask for "proof of posting" certificate. I did in this instance but do you think I can find the ruddy certificate? It is not the value of the thing it is just so annoying that things go missing.

o, thats royal mail.

i hate using them for anything.  Or parcel force.

Thye managed to lose a 30kilo rotavator of mine for a week. according to the track and tarce (which is rubbish) it left the depot, then never came to be delivered or be returned.

so it got a new set of instructions so it would go elsewhere. still days past, it wasnt found. phone calls: its probably on oen of the vans and thye ran out of time delivering it....so why did i pay to have it delivered in a set amount of time??

still it doesnt arrive. antoher phoen call: o we've found it. we will take it to your local post office for freee next time if your not in, save messing. but then the guys rang to make sure we were in when thye delivered it, whcih was nice.

and there it was. 3 sets of instructions on it. it had left the depot once, the morning it was delivered.

We claim compensation.....thye dont reply. maybe it got lsot in the post... ;D ;D

o well ahve gone a bit off track there, Dan will be shouting.

I've had problems several times because temporary postmen couldn't be bothered to deliver them; at one point, I had three missing packages to-ing and fro-ing between here and California. One book never turned up and I'm pretty sure it went back to the seller, who kept it and denied all knowledge. I've got a coin missing right now; fortunately it only cost me a tenner. Infuriating though. It may turn up or it may not; he should have sent it recorded so there's hope.

Theoretically you can claim up to £30 compensation for lost or damaged items if you have a certificate of posting (which is free).
I sent  a parcel with books to the US and they got damaged. I'd  kept the certificate of posting, so filled in the compensation form. That was 2 months ago. I'm still waiting to hear!

Special delivery is not much better. I sent some artwork to my publisher by special delivery to meet a deadline. The parcel was delayed. Because it did eventually turn up, I was told I could only get the cost of postage reimbursed. The actual artwork was not in itself  valuable, but the whole point of sending it special delivery was that it was URGENT!

Wardy have you tried phoning them? You have to go through about 17 choices before you get to talk to a human who has the 'it's a busy time of year large  volume of post blahblahblah' excuse ready.
