Post by: Annadl on December 31, 2005, 11:03:21
Do any of you peeps glaze your terracotta pots?  If so what do you use?

Thanks, Anna

I don't know about glazing terracotta pots as I've never tried, but last summer (after a good turnout of the shed) I was left with loads of assorted terracotta pots and plastic containers in various shades and conditions - all really needing 'something'.

The plastic containers really needed to be thrown away as they were faded and really dirty, plus nothing really matched.

My 9 year old helped me to wash all of the pots/containers and terracotta bits and bobs, and then we coated everything with an undercoat of pale emulsion (also evicted from the shed along with the spiders).  We finished by coating everything with a layer of gloss paint, and then painted simple designs around the rims in contrastaing gloss paint.

I'm not going so far as to say they looked wonderful, but after the container plants grew and lobelia/geraniums trailed about, the pots looked really nice.  We are going to re-gloss all of them in a different colour this summer to ring the changes.

Hope you find out about glazing terracotta pots as that sounds like something we might have a go at.

What about clear varnish (suitable for outdoor use)?

A couple of years ago we painted some small terracotta pots with ordinary emulsion paint then protected the paint with varnish. Being only an indoor paint the emulsion didnt last  that long (about a year outdoors) but i am sure the varnish alone would last a lot longer if you chose the right stuff.

Hope this helps

I've not glazed my pots, but I have painted my terracotta pots with poster paints (look in the cheap book stores, like The Works) - mixed small amounts of colour with white and wiped over with a sponge - look really amazing.  In previous years I've had fun with stencils of bumble bees and frogs.
