We all share an interest in gardening and allotmenteering but I wonder what other interests or hobbies people have? What do you do when you're not at work or at the allotment? :)
Read, study (Biblical Studies and theology), preach, try to keep my local Methodist church together, keep bees, collect ancient coins, mainly Roman.
Motorcycling, folk music, morris dancing, sea fishing, scientific research into the effects of over-indulging with alcoholic beverages.
Still testing, (excuse the pun)
Walk my many dogs. Go sled dog racing with my huskies and alaskan malamute. Look after 4 cats. Look after 10 tropical fish tanks ( soon to be 11 ). Listen to my favorit music ( Status Quo ). Boozing at home or on the lottie. ;D
Will have to substitute garden for allotment. Other interests? Keeping in touch with my far flung family by wonderful email and pics. Also avid reader, love biographies and books on Royalty. In the winter months I like to do my decorating, have been rather lazy this year (old age creeping/galloping on) but intend starting early in the new year. Oh yes and I do love listening to my type of music, Anyone for Bette Midler, Barry White. Judy Garland, Rosemarie?????
Music, specifically guitar, cooking, and exploring my new found friendships ...
Church and reading Gods Word, Playing piano and organ, walking, oil painting and outdoor drawing.treasurer of local allotment society
Erm.....apart from the lottie... listening to music, playing guitar, recorder
( yes....really, stop giggling ::))...flute... erm annoying the Head at our school, reading, Historical stuff, gardening club..... OK why not ;D writing music and singing!!!! Child herding and tobogganing!!!
Not all at the same time, obviously....cos that would be plain daft... :)
Church (leading Sunday school), golf, fishing, my children, oh and yeah and that other person, ermm who are they again...oh yeah the wife {GG} - only joking.
Listening to music (varies from C/W to classical), playing my keyboard and making dolls etc which I either give away or sell at a craft fare or offload on Ebay ::) Used to do alot of tapestry, but ran out of wall space ;D
I do miss my gardening though - roll on spring :) :) :)
Horse-riding (got 1st one approx 6 weeks ago). College (2 evenings a week). Amateur author currently working on first full-sized novel. Listing to music (preferably Meat Loaf). Needlework. Reading
CC
Lorna I like Barry White as well :)
Joji, I've always wanted to ride in a sleigh pulled by huskies, sounds wonderful, where do you live, I assume not in the UK?
Gardengirl, what kind of dolls do you make?
If anyone has photos of their creations that they'd like to share I'd love to see them in the gallery or even post them in here. It's fascinating to hear what other interests people have, some are quite unexpected and unusual. :)

I do live in the UK. I live in South Wales. ;D
If you ever can or do get over this way you are quite welcome to come and have a ride. Winter time only as summer is rest time for them. ;D
Gosh Jess - where do I begin ;D Have made 100's over the years but here is a photo of a few that I have made
:o WOW GG They are fantastic. Can you make me a husky ? ;D
Joji, I never thought of someone in the UK with huskies and sleigh etc. that's wonderful. I'll definitely look you up if I visit Wales again, thanks :D
Gardengirl, those are lovely! Are they knitted, my computer screen isn't that good at picking up detail so it's difficult to see. :)

Well I must make sure my daughter doesnt see Bagpuss, she may be 16 but will still want one !!! I must also make sure she doesn't see these posts about horses !
No, thought about it. Can't think of a single other thing... :)
Really interesting hobbies. Driving huskies sounds exhilirating and I love the soft toys and always really admire anyone who is crafty. I quite enjoy knitting and crochet and was just thinking over the holidays I would like to get back doing it. I am a left hander and it was always agony trying to learn anything like that when I was at school so I was never very confident.
I practice Tai Chi and I am interested in complimentary therapies. I trained as a Reflexologist over 12 years ago and praticed until about four years ago. I have also dabbled in Reiki, Crystal Healing and Homeopathy, the things that have really helped my health over the years. I love music and have a very eclectric taste in it. You will always hear something going at our house. I took a singing course at the beginning of the year too which was brilliant and I would like to do more of that in 2006. I am really interested in technology and have a thirst for learning more. I was a member of our local allotment committee last year and may go back to it next year, though it is quite thankless work. My allotment and my garden are my main interests, mainly because you can't be half hearted about growing things, and it is the thing that brings me peace and contentment and a feeling of well being more than anything else that I do. :) busy_lizzieÂ
I'd love to be able to crochet busy_lizzie, I wouldn't know where to start though. But that's something I'd like to learn next year. :)
outside gardening lots of things, play guitar, and penny whistle lol (aint as easy as u may think) photography, greenpeace activist, british sign language (welsh) heavily into promoting the rights of minority groups, cooking, drinking and spliffin to keep it real  ::) ::) ::).. dunno if this counts as an activity?? memeber of the WWF (adopted a tiger called malu pothi, Cat protection league where i sponsor a cat cabin and also sponsor a badly treated dog called ben who lives in ballymena but cant have human visitors because of the brutal treatment he recieved, and only just sponsored a third world child.. hell you show me an in-equality/injustice and I am in there.. tis my way

There is over 1000 of us through out the UK. PM me what area your in and I can ask around to see if someone in the club will take you on a ride in your area. ;D
Wow, that would be absolutely fantastic joji! Trouble is I'll probably get hooked and want to keep a dozen huskies ;D I'll send you a pm in a minute :)
Ozzy, what country is your sponsored child in? My sister sponsors a child in Mauritius.
Thanks for the PM Jess. ;D The answer is LIKE THIS :o :o !!!!! ;D

Thanks Jess. I will see what I can do for you. There is quite a few husky owners your end of the country. :)
I didn't think I had interests until I stopped and thought to myself.  I am involved in the Church in the village  being Session Clerk and Elder.  Sunday School Treasurer.  Also ont he Flower Show Committee,  Treasurer again.  Interested in the Village and its History.  Enjoy Scottish Borders History and was a Family Historian for 15 years until I ran out of family!!!  Recording Monumental Inscriptions!!!!  I like music, but got a varied taste.  Like Walking and enjoying the countryside.  Photography but my main pastime is Bird Watching and would just love to see a Kingfisher.  I also enjoy Driving. Â
Joji - I'm afraid I haven't found a pattern for a husky yet :), but they are one of my favourite breeds - great photos.
;D ;D ;D Jess - the nearest I have got to making a chicken are Easter chicks - and yes, they are knitted.
Forgot to mention that I still like keeping fit - go to a dance aerobic class once a week - there's life in the old girl yet :D........stems from doing quite a bit of stage dancing in my younger years and also ballroom dancing. I must say that 'Strictly' has given me the urge to take it up again, but OH wont oblige unfortunately.
Gardengirl - if you took up some of the modern dances, you wouldn't need your OH (which might itself be a kick up the bum for him). I love dancing and do modern jive (Ceroc), salsa and lindy hop. I'm planning my trip to Herrang in Sweden with my boyfriend (month long dance camp) already, but lottie might suffer if I'm gone too long.
Also keen on DIY (currently replacing kitchen in anticipation of wonderful lottie gems) and doing furniture making evening class.Â
When I have any spare time left try and get out on my mountain bikes ... some friends of mine have huge hounds and they fasten the leashes to the bikes and then whoosh ... off the go through the woods - great fun !
LOL @ poker markyb
I am trying to teach my nephew how to gamble or more to the point.. how to bluff or read other peoples cards.. so far only been playing pontoon and brag but am telling ya mate if he was in a saloon somewhere he would have been shot at least 50 times over LOL.. not sure crafty is the right word marky i would lean towards "astute" tis a switched on game for sure, heavily inot 10 card brag at the moment and losing loads ffs LOL tis amazing how those 10p stakes mount up and not so long back was playing for a pot of almost 30 squidleys LOL

I used to enjoy poker when I was young, but I always lost. Just a simple soul you see, not at all crafty, they always saw me coming ... ;D Solitaire was more my game ...

You've got an allotment, that makes you definitely not exceedingly dull :D
Was a dress maker and professional soft furnishings body in a former life. Â Still enjoy to knit and crochet, even embroidery and smocking - by hand only.
Love to ride whenever I get to the country. Â Fly fishing but haven't since I got married.
Living so near to London feel very Lorna Doonish - take me back to the moors please ;)
Okay, here goes. I enjoy: reading contemporary novels; listening to a wide variety music (especially 60's rock and pop and David Bowie); cryptic crosswords; eating out in good restaurants; visiting modern art exhibitions (I'm a Tate member); supporting a variety of charities including fund-raising for Cats Protection; pottering around interesting markets and sitting outside a bar with a bottle of wine people watching. Â
G xx
Erm G....haven't you forgotten something?? Will give you few mins... ::)
Shhh! Lottie - I was trying to keet THAT quiet. ;)
G xx
Nah - just joking. I like rambling, cycling, reading (very cerebral) music from the wierd to the wonderful etc..... I also like winding people up....get's me into trouble sometimes.
Does smoking marijuana and engaging in free love count as interests?
;D ;D ;D
;D ;D ;D
You're going to leave out your great passion G?? Well, I'm shocked and deeply, deeply disappointed....
LOL!! Georgie!! Sorry!!
Ooops forgot one ... Chatting to my friends!! ;) :D ;D :P :-*
Wardy, I just wondered why YOU hadn't mentioned them in your list :)
I must admit I'm into a spot of philatio/stamp collecting...
Hey redclanger , care to disclose any of your more interesting music, I am one who is interested anyway ...
Wardy I collect stamps and have sinus
I don't know what I will know that you don't Derek - I'll have a think about it and get back to you.
PS I have quite a few sinuses (sini?) I had'em washed out once.
ewww why? Just use your finger? ::)
You have one hell of a long bendy finger Max. ;D Where did you get it?
I'm E.T.'s love child... :)
That explains a lot ;D
My other main interest is Longbow Archery! It's fun showing off in front of weedy men! Drawing a 50lb bow is not easy!
And yes... I even manage to hit the target!!
;)
Oooo TT! I'd love to give that a go!! Is it pricey? Would I be allowed anywhere near a dangerous weapon I ask myself....
Archery is something I'd love to try. :)
You have impressed me Becky.
Ok. Â I admit my great passion is Manchester United. Â There, it's all Lottie's fault if everyone now piles in on me. Â :(

Hi I love to go cycling and swimming.
I also enjoy playing footie, but mainly watch it now. :D

Ta Derek - going to make mine alphabetical now ;D
Yes Eva Cassidy took a little while to grow on me, but I adore her voice and style. There are many female vocalists in my list, that is a prominent feature in my appreciation of music ...
I copied my list of an Access database Redclanger, sadly it is not up to date.
For instance there is no Steve Hackett (Genesis).
Plus
Apoptygma Beserk
Beautiful South
Blondie
Maroon 5
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Savage Garden
Pavement (thanks Red ...)
Melanie (thanks jennym)

Okay can I start a straw poll here? Do you arrange your albums alphabetically and if so, would you file The Beatles under 'B' or 'T'? Personally, I ignore the 'The' everytime.
G xx
I dont follow those rules ...
I would normally ignorre the the but this time I just copied and pasted into Wrod and then sorted it so it must not ignore the the.
I never realised how big my artist list is until I listed it just now

I used to love creative writing.....love to write, the old fasioned way, with that prehistoric impliment, a fountain pen and real ink. Maybe as the kids grow I will have more time to write.......
I also used to do a lot of dress making, and for a while made all of my own clothes...another thing that has had to go on the back burner whilst the kids run my life! :-\
I go orienteering and run the club at school. I play the piano a bit and am an ace at scrabble. I love taking the kids up mountains, and that's about it.... Oh, and cooking when in the mood.
What no Stones? ;D ;D
me... longbow archery, saxon re-enactment. tapestry embroidery, and trying to build my trike.
david...motorcycle club/rallies, scuba diving, canoeing and trying to build my trike  ;D

;D ;)
I like your taste in music Derek and you have quite a few in there that I love. Fairport Convention are on at the Sage in Gateshead in February and we hope to go to see them, have just been waiting until the holidays ended so I could book.
My OH would be keen to know whether anyone does collect stamps - yes really!! He is a very keen Stamp Collector himself, and can be quite embarrassing at times. When I told him I had met someone recently from Australia, all he could say was "they do very nice stamps in Australia"! ;D busy_lizzie
No - have to confess much to my chagrin I have never been much into soul. Not into much blues either unless it really is good. Maybe just do not have the right vibe Max.
Well.....shakes her head in disgust......I'm shocked by the lot of you....How could you....I'm in bits.....what about the Wombles???? ;D ;)
Love the Blues, esp Blue Grass.....welll....anything really, bar rap..eeeuuuuu to rap!

Soul is something I found difficult Terrace, but I do enjoy Diana Ross, Motown yes, again female vocals ...
The wombles belong rightfully collecting rubbish on Wimbledon Common ... IMHO
I really enjoy the blues, Gary Moore, Santana, Grateful Dead ... loved having 12 bar jams as well at our classes ... letting my hair down ... ;D

I'll bring my 3CD Best of Ska set to the next Castle Square Market RC! Incidently, as you like Inspiral Carpets I'll let Graham Lambert (Carpets guitarist) know - he'll be dead chuffed (He's an Oldham lad and a big OAFC supporter - once gave me a backstage pass for a big gig the Carpets were doing, I was expecting sex, drugs and rock n' roll, I should never have read that Rolling Stones biog!!)
My main other passions are (in no particular order):
Horse riding - I did have my own for a year, but sold him two years ago after his several attempts to kill me. I now ride a friend's horse every wednesday and have a lesson at the riding school at the weekend.
Reading - I'm mostly into non-fiction, although I do still enjoy Kurt Vonnegut and Philip K Dick's books. Mostly books on gardening, herbal medicine, ancient social and spiritual history (from about 6000-2000 years ago), philosophy.
Watching films - bizarre non-hollywood ones mostly.
Music - (let's see how many I can remember...)
The Beatles (later stuff)
Beethoven
Bjork
The Boards of Canada
David Bowie
David Byrne
Nick Drake
Grateful Dead
Jimi Hendrix
Jefferson Airplane
Janis Joplin
Joni Mitchel
Pink Floyd
Santana
Sedir Rose (or however it's spelt)
Shpongle
Cat Stevens
Frank Zappa
Drawing a blank now...
Photography - mostly plants and nature.
Cooking
spending time with Mr Aqui.
I used to be very nervous of horses and ponies Aqui, but with my daughter riding every weekend I have become very relaxed around them.
Another interesting list of music ...
Aqui. I so love reading can never go to sleep without reading. Even if it is 3am after a party I still have to read!! Have got two books amongst my Christmas presents...Next to you (Gloria Hunniford) Extreme (Sharon Osbourne.) .Charlie had to put up extra shelves to hold books. Have got a whole set of Readers Digest People and places (very interesting). I never throw a hard back away, Goodness knows what the kids will do with them all when I am no longer around.
Have a real varied taste in music.. from Pavarotti to Bette Middler, Tammy Wynette etc etc.
I also used to ride when the kids all had ponies. My daughter bought a horse for her girls last year, I am afraid sciatica stops me from trying to ride again.
Have you seen Noi, Albinoi Aqui?
Aqui, you mentioned turning your photography enjoyment into a career recently, have you managed to take any steps towards that yet? :)
If I listed my music list on here I would be here all day. I have over 1500 cd's, LP's and 45's still. ;D
Terrence - if that's a test of how obscure my film tastes are, I've failed. Not seen that one.
Jesse. um. er. never got around to that. Still slogging away at it amateurly. (You missed my recent plan to be a professional gardener too.)
One of my (and Debbie's) favourite comedies:
Volere volare (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0103223/)
redclanger - love that one too. Haven't seen it in years, though!
QuoteTerrence - if that's a test of how obscure my film tastes are, I've failed.
Please - call me Terry ;). No tests - just hoping someone else had seen this great film...
Tel M ;) - what's it all about? Mr Aqui is the film finder (I'm to busy searching out vegetables) - I'll have to put him onto it.
Remembered a few more bands...
Leonard Cohen
The Doors
Bob Dylan
Tom Waits
(I'm sure there were more...)
Aqui, it's about an albino teenager in Iceland. It's a comedy in a sad sort of way.

I've loved reading this!!!
I like drawing and painting, photography (very amateur!)making paper and paper products, reading, listening to music (long list but Queen are probably at the top!) cooking, visiting gardens and being a mum!
What kind of paper products do you make Plocket? I bought a book on making paper but haven't got around to making anything yet. :)
I've made some books and papier mache bowls. Picture frames. That sort of thing. It's great fun - do give it a go. I find now that I know what I'm doing the fun bit is going round the garden and trying out different plants!!!
I plan to make something this year, I bought the book towards the end of the year and just ran out of time with preparing gifts for christmas. Some of the papers in the book that include seeds and flower petals look incredible. I never thought of making picture frames and bowls from paper, would you be able to post any photos of your creations Plocket, I'd love to see them. :)
Oh crumbs! I'll get the camera out and see what I can find lying about the house! What book do you have? I ask because I've got a few books on paper making.
The book is called Papermaking techniques book by John Plowman. It mainly covers the basics and equipment which is what I need to get started, once I have the techniques right then I'll probably be on the look out for something that gives more inspiration so any book recommendations would be great too. :)
Two really good books that I have are "Making your own paper" by Marianne Saddington, and "Paper Pleasures" by Faith Shannon. Both are lovely and have some great ideas. I'm still looking for things to photograph - mum has many of my better pieces, including a jug which is actually water tight!!!
I'll have a look for those books and add them to my ever growing wish list of books, thanks Plocket. :)

I've loved reading this!!!
Me too - interesting to know what everyone else does when they're not in the garden/allotment.
I had to give up church and also acting and theatre-going (I trained as a lecturer in acting) due to illness, but I seem to have plenty of other things to occupy my time. I like reading (mostly fiction, especially SF & fantasy - though also love looking at the pictures in gardening books & planning what I'd put where in my dream garden!); I take a lot of photos (currently have elderly SLR camera & very keen to get into digital photography soooon) & make the best ones into greetings cards; I'm a member of National Trust, English Heritage & various other organisations & spend most of holidays visiting their gardens/properties; and I am also a Buffyatric (think of it as an addiction ...).
My music collection is a lot smaller & less eclectic than it would be if Romeo didn't have 2,000 plus CDs/tapes (which are all obsessively catalogued alphabetically) - I just listen to his. If he didn't have them, my list would include Kirsty MacColl, Pulp, Beautiful South, U2, Roxy Music, David Bowie, Ultravox, Japan, Transvision Vamp, The White Stripes, The Alarm, A-Ha, Larry Norman, Meatloaf, & The Beach Boys - & undoubtedly several more I've forgotten.
Wow! Just reading all those different hobbies makes a girl feel exhausted. But it's nice to find other people who have such a variety of hobbies (a lot of people I know complain constantly about having nothing to do, but refuse get up of their sofa and find an something they can enjoy).
Currently I am learning to play guitar, studying Eng Lit & Lang, listening to loads of different music, reading books, mostly fantasy but I'll give anything a go if the story looks good, gardening, cooking (hopefully with a lot of my own home grown stuff next year!) and I recently acquired a book on preserving, painting and drawing, going to see art exhibitions, recycling (yes, I know it's sad but It's becoming such an obsession that I think it could classed as a hobby), learning about aromatherapy and sustainable living.
Music I love to listen to: Pink Floyd, The Who, Red hot chili peppers, queens of the stone age, nina simone, sade, greenday, hard-fi, jeff buckley, jack johnson, meat loaf (so uncool, i know), jet, the killers, KT Tunstall (her album is fab), nirvana, radiohead, seth lakeman, scissor sisters, the beatles (recently discovered sgt pepper and the white album) santana, the darkness, morissey, foo fighters, artic monkeys, the verve, coldplay, sugarcult, the bravery, rufus wainwright, ash......thats all i can remember at the mo.

Love listening to the radio - BBC Radio 4 (Deadringers, The Archers, GQT, ISIHAC, Just a Minute, ....) and when I feel like it, BBC7 on the web. There is no TV here, though when was at folks, watched CSI, Casualty & Â Holby City (the seasonal special - I know where that tunnel is, and it isn't in Holby/Bristol!), whatever was on though I missed Mary Poppins & Chitty.....
I wonder if it would be possible to add peoples interests to their picture?
Those who wanted to could add their interests into their signature space :)
Mine are all full up !!!
