Title: cleaning a lawnmower.
Post by: adam04 on December 17, 2005, 16:33:15
How do i clean my lawnmower?

have pretty much finished with the lawnmower now until next spring, so need to get it cleaned, but its an elctric one so cant just hose it down like a petrol one. Is there a quick way to do it??

it wll be hard to scrape it off as the cuttins are very very small (usually less than 2mm) so they dont flake off easily.

Can i do the same for my strimmer?  again its electric.

I normally use two items, a wire brush, and an oiled cloth. My lawnmower is a working tool, so never looks pristine.

I get it outside and spray WD40 on it and leave it for a bit and this seems to make any grass stuck on it come unstuck.  You can then get it off with a soft brush, I use a bit of wood to get in the nooks and crannies so I don't damage anything.  Then you can either wipe it over with a dry cloth or leave it.  the WD40 gives it a bit of protection from damp I think as well as I have a damp wash house.  Poor me  :)

...don't forget that with a plastic flymo type mower, once you have washed and cleaned the underside, to spray it with wax furniture polish. It helps prevent the build up of grass sticking in the first place.  ;)

The WD40 does the same job but doesn't smell half as nice.  I was using some polish in the house the other day and afterwards was on here and thought how nice my "perfume" smelled   :)   It is vitally important to have a fragrant lawnmower  ;D

Mine is kept fragrant with all the cat poo that gets deposited on my lawn.

There's a product with the delightful name of Muc Off that will take most crud off cars, bikes, and lawnmowers.  Probably tackles cat poo as well.

My lawn is still in full growth, so shan't bother cleaning the mower....have enough to clean and tidy with the house!
