Title: How much wood would a woodpecker?
Post by: Palustris on December 14, 2005, 17:00:37
One day it will be warm enough to stand outside and take these shots, instead of through the double glazing which does 'fuzz' them a bit.

What a wonderful picture.  Thats a bird I would love to see but never have!  Do they regularly eat peanuts?    I always thought they were insectivorous to exclusion.

They adore peanuts. We get one at least everyday and have had five at a time. They are very aggressive so you often see quite spectcualr squabbles. Have seen parents taking peanuts to baby.

I once camped on a wooded site in Cornwall, and was woken by the sound of woodpeckers drumming, so I got up at about 5, and they were all over the place. An hour later, all was quiet, and you'd never have seen them unless you were really looking, as they stay up in the trees. When I went for a walk through the oakwoods later, I could find them by scanning the high branches with a pair of binoculars. I hear them drumming every year in a patch of woods by the allotments, but they're hard to see.

Wonderful shot. We get visitors in spring; they will take food off the table. They then have a go at the pole supporting the table... ::) ;D
