I have just received these Peter "thingy" Peppers mentioned in another post from the USA. I have never grown peppers before and don't have a greenhouse or conservatory. Do I hear cries of sympathy? or just smug sniggers ? ;D Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. TIA {:¬)#
Presumably you have a windowsill AikenDrum ... choose one on the sunny side of the house ...put seeds in a pot with some compost, add water, watch the gasps of amazement as the phallic fruits appear ... ;D.
Perhaps not quite that easy, but that is the gist ...
Derekthefox :D
ermmm, when ? I don't use heating of any kind in my abode. I'm convinced it makes us more prone to annoying ailments and lessens our bodies natural immune system. Weird or what ? ;D
Treat them the same as you would your tomato plants, although I believe they like a longer growing season.
phankx MikeB, it says 90 to maturation so that seems about right. Beytter get ready for a visit from the vice squad, lol
Aiken you can always cover the pot with a plastic bag till the rude seedlings appear, acts like a propagator and gives them a bit of a head start.......opps that came out all wrong, but you know what I mean! :-[
Laffs in Real Life, thanks D_P, I think I'll do just that. Now .... any particualr type of platic bag ? ;D
OOOh clever idea with the plastic bag DP ... a clear one would help AikenDrum as it would let more light in ...
Derekthefox :D
Humble, Drummerboy? Did I miss something?
I'm sure you'll work it out Tim :o

Agree with you on the heating thingy aiken - but have to admit to having central heating on just recently. In air conditioned and central heating buildings those little nasty bugs do spread :(
Belinda - yes, saw it, thanks - most unlike me, I was just having a slight snidery with AD.
Aha-I now `get the picture` :). It probably needs covering with something, but how big does it grow??.
You could try the old `water hoop and polythene `cloche trick to keep it to keep it `perky` ;D
I picked up on it tim :D and it grows to about 18" to 24"
hi aiken drum!
i'm certainly NOT an expert, never having grown peppers successfully but thought i'd pass a tip from "the real seed catalogue".
the blurb on my seed packet suggests starting a few pepper plants off on the window sill as early as january to get a really long season. they also mention that some initial heat will make germination more likely.
good luck,
Tara xx
Thanks for that Tara, duly filed away. {:¬)#
Trouble is - unless you're growing pot plants, indoors - where do you put them that is frost free? The very earliest that I've put plants into a cold 'house is mid-April - with considerable risk.
And, as well as heat for germination - like 18-25C - everything needs LIGHT. And in Feb-Mar you just don't have it. Unless you buy it in like we do.
In the end, everything comes to him who waits!
Thought this was quite useful? http://www.fiery-foods.com/dave/containers.asp
Interesting link there Tim, thank you.
Derekthefox :D
Derek - who's cooking lunch?? My Girls are at the Garden Centre for the tree etc - but the Banana Curry is awaitng them!!
See Mamta's site for green banana curry? Add potato? And, of course, fish!
Have you tried,

MikeB
tim, many thanks for that link. Gave me lots to think about though looks like I'll be going the container route. Decisions, decisions, decisions ...... {:¬)#
i grew peppers and aubergines on my plot for the first time this year. i covered them with a really large cloche, and they did really well (and i live in the high peak)!!! will definately be doing again this year!
I grew mine under cover and I got one tiny aubergine, also in Derbyshire :)
Thanks MikeB ...
Which lunch was you referring to Tim ?
Derekthefox :D
wardy, I don't seem to remember asking about aubergines, are you trying to hijack my post ? *sobz*
Yes, I want to grow far more aubergines next year ... (sorry AikenDrum ;D )
Derekthefox :D
That's it ! I'm giving up my allotments and going back to restoring antique Scotsmen .... there's just no respect for highly intelligent, good looking weirdos on this website anymore ... I've tried to fit in, God knows I have ! but all I ever get is ..... well .... discussions about aubergines ! < .. rolls a green cigarette ...
Must try aubergines this year ;D ;D ;D
... mmmm, lurve aubergines ...
Yes, I am going to try Tres Hative de Barbentane, from the Organic Garden Catalogue, they are supposed to be very productive ...
Derekthefox ;D
think mine are Black Beauties .... takes me back to my childhood
i´ve found over decades of aubergine-growing: they are a lot easier to grow than tomatoes and never get diseased. i just don´t like them very much.
same goes for peppers and chillies.
How about rationaly justifying/defending your conclusions ? you're not really telling me/us anything ! {:¬)#
talking to me-aiken drum?
Look AD, someone mentioned aubergines ok. It wasn;t me who mentioned em first. And anyway what if I did? ;D
< ... and stay out of my weft and ....ermmm ... whatever that other bit is ... as well !
Was the word warp(ed) the one you were looking for AD..
Sorry but your posts did make me smile ;D
Derek
I didnt start the aubergines chat either, but I enjoyed it !!! ;)
Derekthefox ;D
Datz da wun Derek, warped, ... sorta has a kinda ring wif wardy .... writes it on her pic ......
Tst...Aiken.....have just read this.........you know Santa is watching, they'll be no pressies for you at this rate, he'll send them all to Wards......and you'll upset the lottie fairy, would so hate you to have under-achieving peppers.....
Love aubergines, by the way!! Had lovely crop this season, darned if I can remember what they were though...mm.... did tell DtF, how embarassing to have to ask someone else what variety I grew.. ::)
Tres Hative de Barbentane I believe, Lottie, although I will apologise if I have it wrong. I have targetted these for next season ...
Derekthefox :D
Thanks Derek, have made note on forehead..
Ha ha ha this site is doing my head in, normally by this time before Christmas I have gone completely ga ga ;D
Derekthefox :D
Remind me Dominique, how were you right? And aren't aubergines temporarily off topic? ;D ;D ;D
Derekthefox :D
oops might have been me going on about aubergines....but i definately had NOTHING to do with the banana curry!!!! :P
