Title: Covering goose gogs in winter
Post by: chuff on December 12, 2005, 16:58:59
I have just planted goose gogs, do I need to cover them in netting during the winter, there only little and don't seem to have much on them for the birds to take yet my book says cover them and a fellow lottie lover said he doesn't bother ??? I'm new to all this so I don't have a clue, so I was wondering how many of you do and many of you don't cover.

They only need netting when they have fruit on, if then. I find the birds don't bother them much; they prefer all the other fruit.

Hi Chuff

To answer your question in more than one line, (d**n I'll never get my post count into the '000s).

Birds will take a share of the goosegogs but this depends on what else is available, round our way we lose about 50%.  So I net them.

However it is often worth removing netting during the winter so birds can get in and eat any grubs and pests that may be sheltering around the bushes.

Other than that they are very easy.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I have decided to leave them uncovered and hopefully they will be ok :)
