I love it at this time of year, because it keeps me fit, warm and gives me a good appetite. I do my digging in moderation, interspersed with other activities like hedge trimming, and bonfire making ...

Don't like digging, not at the moment anyway.  I've got RSI (Repetitive Stress Injury) from using this mouse too much.  ;D  ;D So if it snows here in Leeds, I won't be able to dig us out.

Still no snow yet, but there's still time  :'(  :'(

I must say that I LOVE it. I must be a bit of a saddo because I seem to love soil and its make up. Sometimes if I find a large clod I find myself picking it to pieces to find whats in it. Following worm tracks and other things. That must be why it always seems to take me ages to dig an area.
I also Like worms and make sure that they are okay if I dig them up. I now only dig with a fork and not a spade as I hate it when I chop them in half. No they dont divide in two and both live.
Regards
Chris

Thought I'd hate it, but since taking on my lotty I've discovered I quite enjoy it! Peace and quiet and just me and my spade, and the crows cawing away in the trees - a lovely way to spend an afternoon...

Cheers,
Rob ;)

Love it when it's the second year of digging it and it's much easier. The first time round it's all couch grass and brambles and hate that.

I have to say that I quite enjoy it.  There's a quiet satisfaction to be had as the area of dug soil slowly and steadily increases.

I agree with Lorna that a third option would have been better - I usually like digging but sometimes with my weed strewn plot it can be a bit of a bind though.  However, found I could not do any of my other weekend work this weekend until I had gone and done a bit of digging (circs did conspire against me again though this w/e so have not done enough)

PS - I have been thinking of getting a head torch as strapping one to my fork/spade would be additional weight.

3000+ members and only 14 votes.  Where is everyone?

I do believe Bob Flowerdew doesn't dig at all.

i've also noticed that what my lotment neighbours call digging i call weeding, or aerating.  digging means diiferent things to different folks.

Well, I voted, but am a third option gal! I've covered some of the plot, and dug some which is very satisfying and am undecided as to the rest!! But I'm very similar to Chris, it takes me forever to dig, cos I'm so busy moving worms out of the way, you'd think they'd have gotten the idea by now... ::) Voted love it, by the way, cos sometimes there's nothing like it! When you've finished and stand back and admire the earth....

Redclanger.  Well my thoughts are that if we get the severe winter we have been promised my weeds will die and by spring my sciatica will be better ;D In actual fact I had dug the flower borders earlier and have dug most of the tiny  area I am going to grow veg in next year.. I still have a piece of ground about 25ft by 4ft which is going to be hard work but would like to get it ready for more veg. On the other hand I am toying with the idea of raised bed.(save all the hard digging??) Happy digging. :) :)

think we need a depends.

I dont mind doing little bits, especially if tyhe ground is nice, but like if i was to dig the clay at the moment with all the water, wouldnt enjoy that at all.

Thats why i have a rotavtor, also dont like the digigng while im doing it, but once its doen it feels good!

From memory Bob reckons that you will need to dig a bed initially -but once you've done it and got the weeds out (the tricky bit) you don't need to do it again.

Love it!  Nothing looks sexier (apart from my darling and Iwan Thomas) than a freshly dug, fluffed up veggie patch, just waiting for lovely new plantlets to make themselves at home!

Have to be in the mood to dig, and then I dig for England, has to be clearing a wilderness area to make me really happy, but on the whole I am a raised bed kinda gal to keep my Osteopath happy and less wealthy! ;D

Very strange thing, I get ocassional attacks of Sciatica, but when I cycle to the plot, or am even digging, it just disappears, is it just in my mind after all ?   *scratches head*

I'm with you on this little brother...I never considered a dug garden to be sexy...it must be a 'girl thing'  ;)

When I go home covered in mud looking like a dug over garden with hair I am sure my Governor doesn't consider me sexy for one minute...or am I missing some signals here???

I get the same response Derek, and not just from my OH, but all the passers-by who see this tramp-like creature from the bog wandering across the carpark with bags of carrots and parsnips ...  ;D

Today I loved it. After doing my back a bit of an injury I stopped going to the lottie for a while. After the first few minutes of stiffness I really enjoyed it. I've got to work tonight otherwise I'd be tempted to go back and do some more.

I am for the third option, "it depends"!  If I am digging lovely soft already cultivated soil, then "yes", it is very satisfying, but if I am having to dig couch grass or other weeds out, then "no".  It is a particularly big "no" if I am digging clay like soil that is heavy and backbreaking.  :) busy_lizzie

I'm still at the stage of digging out couch grass etc and I have done 7.5 of my target 8 beds.  I hate digging at the moment as it's so heavy and every time I go up the lottie more couch has sprung up where I've dug! :(

Only in some respects Derek. Unlike you I've got long hair, glasses, am scrawny and smell worse than my dog!

He he well I used to have long hair - once ... and I do wear glasses - removed for the picture to avoid flash reflections ... I am scruffy if not scrawny, and often smell worse than a dog in a bog! But I do scrub up nice ...  ;D

Not got anything in yet!  :o   No fun if you don't get stuff in and nowt to eat or show for your hard work.  All that digging first has only got you a bad back and still no veg to console yourself with  :'(

Wardy is right you know Crash, lotties are for growing stuff... get something in there, beans, garlic, and you will feel brilliant. This reminds me of a bloke on our site, he just keeps pottering, never actually grows anything on one of his two plots ... he has had it for 3 years and it is still riddled with couch and stuff. Still he pays his rent, and we have a live and let live attitude on our committee ...
