Title: Space
Post by: Heldi on November 24, 2005, 11:52:15
Can anyone remember the rhyme that helps you to list the planets in order?

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto.

My son wants to know.

Excellent Lottie...even I could,well maybe, remember that! Thanks  ;D

Derek it won't kill off the thread cos I have another sort of sky at night question...

Twas on the night of...

Oh sorry that was something else. Here goes.

When I was camping way back in September. You know when I went to the Lakes. I spent alot of time in the evenings looking up at the sky.  No light pollution, it was great to be able to see the stars in all their glory. I noticed there was alot of movement in the sky. Way up high at what looked like star level. Moving too fast to be an plane at that height. Thinking how long a plane at a high altitude takes to go across the sky...it takes ages doesn't it.There were lots of planes about but they were clearly seen with their lights etc.  These things looked the same size as stars and were shifting. There were no trails left.  Don't know if I'm describing it well enough.  What are they? Are they shooting stars? Is it space junk? I've seen a shooting star once and it lasted for only seconds. These things you could follow if you could keep up with it.

Eeek I've got to go to school...

You can often see satellites going across the sky if there is little or no light pollution.

Aggh, everytime I read 'Space' I say, out loud, 'the final frontier'!  Come on Emma, the kids already think you are mad!!

My gramps says he can see satellites from his garden when star gazing.  I reakon it was clingon ships you could see!

You can see the International Space Station at night with the naked eye.   {:¬)#

You're not alone Emma!

These things that are supposed to help you remember other things... I always have such trouble remembering them. Mr Aqui knows the planets from one of those, but I can never remember what it is and get all in a muddle. But I can name the planets easily!

PS - Pluto isn't a planet...

E-J

That's because Captain Kirk has 3 ears :

.
His left ear, his right ear and (wait for it) his final front ear!

That's as old as series 1.

EJ and Aqui,I nearly put "space...the final frontier" in the subject title lol!

Thanks folks. I'm only left thinking why I didn't ask before? I've been wondering about it for two months!

I did once see a light travelling at great speed...about as fast as the RAF jets that go over here all the time.
It was at the height of a lowish (seen them alot lower) flying jet but travelled in an arch across the sky.. No aircraft lights. It looked like it was going to come down somewhere.  Now that has puzzled me, oh for about a year now!

Ah, that one was extra terrestrials from outer space.  Quite a common sight around these parts  ;D
