Title: poorly hen
Post by: agapanthus on November 22, 2005, 15:41:28
Can anyone give me some advice on how to make a hen vomit. I think she has a sour crop....very large crop all squishy and she is having a bit of a problem swallowing.....I've read that the best thing to do is to make them vomit as much as possible and then give them live natural yoghurt 2 or 3 times a day thereafter. But how do you do it?? Would hate to lose her :(

You can turn the hen on her back, massage her crop and she will expel some of the crop contents but it is not easy as she will struggle some.

You can then treat with a bit of brandy and yoghurt. In extreme cases surgical intervention may be required.

Agapanthus's husband here....

Thank you so much for for the advice given earlier, backed up by "The Book". Regrettably the poor girl didn't make it - not for lack of trying - and we're feeling the loss here. We'll miss her...

Nic.

I'm sorry to hear your sad news. She seems to have gone down hill very rapidly.  :(

It is always sad to lose livestock but I am afraid it is an inevitable consequence of having livestock.

You tried your best, that is what is important.

Thank you for your kind replies. I never get used to any of the animals passing. I suppose it just comes with the territory. Thanks again, :'(

Oh dear, sorry to hear about your hen.  :(
As Jerry says, its unavoidable, but upsetting none the less.
