While poking about in the loft at the weekend, I noticed the insulation is looking a bit bare around the edges. Some bits are not even covered at all.
(Most of the floor is hard-boarded over.)
Any idea how much getting it re-insulated would cost? I have no idea at all.
We have a two-bed maisonnette, so the loft is probably about the same size as that of a house with three double bedrooms.
What are we talking here? hundreds? thousands?
(I'm trying to work out if we have the money and time to get it down before winter really hits.)
Hi - sweb were doing a good offer a few months ago - dont even think you need to be supplied electric or gas by them think it cost about £125 for 10 inches of insulation for a 2/3 bed property think BG did a simular offer but much more pricey (think difference was £200!) our council also ran some schemes and you didn't even have to live in a council property. But the sweb scheme was great for cost etc

Insulated our loft ourselves - just needed to be careful, wore a mask and gloves for protection from glass wool fibres. got the rolls of insulation from wickes about £20 each can't remember how many we needed I think 1 roll was enough for about 10 square metres - think they had a bulk buy offer on, 3 for the price of 2 or something similar.
I know thats all a bit vague but if cash is tight it might be worthwhile doing it yourself.

You can get the insulation that is wrapped in plastic like a duvet, so you don't come in contact with the fibres. They have it in b and q. :)
We don't normally pay people to do things, unless it would be easier for them to do. (retiled the bathroom ourselves - we'd never done that before!) I just didn't fancy getting fibre glass somewhere :o and the thought of removing and replacing all the hardboard puts me off too (although of course, we will need to remove it to check what's under there - scary prospect!)
It's doesn't seem that much to pay other people to do it, but then it might mean time off work (we've both booked all holiday for the year)... So maybe DIY is the answer. I like Caz or is it Baz's suggestion.

if you are on any benefit etc... you can get it free or you can get a grant contribution towards it if not.
We are getting cavity wall insallation for a 3 bed semi for £120, loft insallation was £180 (but we already have it)
may be worth a call to the council to see if they have a similar scheme??
I tried looking at the council website - but they only said about people on benefits. might give them a call just to make sure.
yeah, definitely try and diy it. Though I don't have the hardboards in my attic, so it may be kinda tricky for you...
