Oh Tim, looks smashing, but it is sad when there are none left fresh to pick.  I had to buy, yes buy my first tomato for at least 5 months in the week.  Wasn't sweet, wasn't tasty, but was for a BLT so the good bacon helped.  At least I have 14 pints of tom sauce in the freezer ready for blogs, chillies, curries, soups, stews, and so on................and so on............

Wardy...

I know it isn't the English thing to complain but if you are really disappointed with your meal why should you have to pay what they claim it is worth. As far as I recall under law you can make an offer of payment that you deem is sufficient for the food, and as long as the offer you make isn't silly i.e tuppence and you leave your address with them it is up to the restaurateur to take matters further to get back the difference.

I know this isn't a course of action that anyone wants to take after what should be an enjoyable evening out, but if it improves the standard of food offered it should be.

You weren't dining out in that London were you..I hear thems a bunch of fiddlers down there.   ;)

Edit to add.

Sorry for the slight thread tangent.

There is another interesting point that I have noticed though, which is an aside to the experiences discussed. Since I have been preparing food for many years now, I have noticed that since I have been growing my own vegetables, how the flavours have improved, particularly with recipes such as soups. This has made me more appreciative of when an establishment HAS prepared some quality fare, which is perhaps sometimes criticised by less enlightened people who expect 'standard' food, come rain or shine. I nearly always seek out the 'dish of the day', and have rarely been disappointed. Once this ended up as tripe soup in Bulgaria (I couldnt even read the menu - it was in the cyrillic alphabet!), but it was still delicious, even although the waitress tried to explain what tripe was with hand gestures !!!

My OH has started not wanting to take me out anywhere for dinner. I ask if the fish is farmed, where are the eggs from , the vege, the meat! We dont go out much anymore...can make tastier meals at home with fresh produce!  I didnt realise my addiction would turn me into this :o ;D
