Title: beans and courgettes
Post by: aquilegia on November 18, 2005, 10:04:04
We've just had our first hard frost this week and here I am already dreaming about after the last frost next year!

I'm planning to grow peas and beans up a series of teepees in one of my beds with courgettes planted underneath.

Will the courgettes be ok planted in the middle of the teepee, under all the climbers?

I should think so.  I grew a squash at the base of my bean teepee and it was fine  :)  You'll need plenty of organic matter in there as they are all hungry feeders.  I used dollops of manure  :)

I agree with wardy, feed the ground well. The courgettes will spread out to ensure they get enough light, if it is a bit dark in the middle of the teepee. I like this idea of maximising on the available space for certain types of crops. And peas/beans and squash family seem very comfortable together anyway. I may do that myself next year.

Thanks for that idea !

fantastic! That's saved me a bit of room so I might just be able to squeeze some more in!

I've been working on a spreadsheet with everything listed in it's bed for next year. It's going to look beautiful and we're going to be eating homegrown veg every day all summer! (a girl can dream, can't she!)

I grew cucumbers this way last season - they were fine.

With the weather set cold as it is it may be a good weekend for dreaming about next year...
