Title: Clivia Question
Post by: Mimi on November 13, 2005, 19:34:16
I have a clivia that I have had now for 2 years. Just noticed today that the roots are starting to lift the plant out of the pot, they are so thick and congested.  The main plant has one offshoot, which appeared in the spring and one which is only just starting.  Should I re-pot now, or leave it until the spring??

I think you should re-pot it now Mimi because otherwise watering the plant is going to get more difficult as so many of the roots at the bottom of the pot are out of the compost.

Mimi I had a clivia for many years and when the roots started to come to the surface the way yours have I re-potted it without mishap.
Clivias are strong plants and can take re-potting at any time of year. Try to seperate the 'babies' before introducing the mother plant into its new home if you can. They should be fine as long as they have a good root system of its own. Your clivia should still flower without any problems next year as long as you don't pot it up into too big a pot. They actually flower better if they are slightly root bound. Give all the re-potted plants a weak feed about a week after re-potting and this should ensure that they grow strong and healthy.  :)
Hope this helps.
