I want to try suppressing the weeds on my allottment with polythene. I have a roll of blue polythene which I have spare. Would it work, perhaps used with 2 layers. Any advice most welcome please.
I have used plastic in the past, providing it cuts out the light then it should work, but it will attract slugs, as it will be wet underneath
if it is like tarpauline then it is not that recommended. Weed membrane has very fine holes in which still let some water etc.. through and air gets to circulate. Some people have used it. Try searching on words like "weed suppressent" or "carpet" for previous threads on this highly debated topic ;D ;D
I have had some success with blue plastic although it has now decayed and turned into about thirty bits of small blue plastic. I have also had some success with pond liner - some say that plastic makes the ground poisonous because air cannot get through so the vegetation rots anaerobically but this does not seem to have been a problem under my plastic. With regards to slugs, just turn the plastic upside down before you go home and give the birds a feast.
Hope not!! I've just covered a huge space in rotted manure and covered it in black liner!!! Can't wait to lift it off and see result....will be first season of not diggin, though arms killing me now!!! ::)
