Allotments 4 All

Hi there everyone,
I have had my lottie for 4 years now and have bumbled along somehow but I have been reading your postings and I am ashamed!!   
I was very slack in the planning earlier in the year so I have only Leeks growing at the moment!!  Is there anything I can put in now before the ground freezes?

Also, what do I plant do get 'spring greens' which I love!  Is it a cabbage or what!

Hope someone can take pity on me and help!!

not too late to plant onions and garlic, tohugh you may struggle to find them by the sounds of it - see the other thread.

Spring greens are spring cabbages as far as I know? think you are too late this year

Thanks Daisymay, I will try to get hold of some in the local Garden centre, if I can't, can I use supermarket ones sold for eating?  Also, I have some onion seed but not sure if I should start them now or leave them for the summer ( I do keep the greenhouse heated though-so I might just have a go!!)

Heated greenhouse? Lucky you! But how do you 'harden' plantlets off before putting outside?? And what about light??

It isn't too late to plant some broad beans - Aquadulci Claudia.  These can be planted between Oct and November.

Also Peas - Pilot and Douce Provence.  I planted mine a few weeks ago under a fleece and their little heads are just pearing through.  I hope the two Rats I found in my compost don't get them  >:(

Don't use supermarket garlic, it isn't the correct variety for the UK.  It needs lots more sun to grow.  I tried it last year and it didn't work.  Bought proper winter garlic, not sure of variety, this grew much better as it can cope with less sunlight.

Always think it's a good idea to look around lotties in your area too...that way area/soil/etc differences won't trip you up as much. Got my allotment this year, and after being watched for a few weeks advice then spare seed, plantlets etc began to be offered....we also have a bit of a produce swap going on, which I hope to encourage further!

Not recommended, diseases etc..  for garlic. Onions are already an onion for eating, so not much room for improvement! onion sets are tiny (in comparison) and they grow into a single onion. does that make any sense!! help me out some one more knowledgable?  :)

Hi Machman, i bought some white garlic from a garden centre 2wks ago so you should be able to get some from a good garden centre or nursery. ;D

Try sowing some carrot - early Nantes - you might be lucky and get some baby ones in January, put a bit of fleece over if it gets much colder.

Oooooo I shall go forth and get broad beans...LOVE :-*them! Any variety recomendations?

How long are you keeping fleece over your broad beans Lilly?

I hope to keep the fleece over the peas and Beans for as long as I can.  It's staked out at the moment with long privet branches, so I'll just keep lifting the fleece higher and higher.  Only trouble is the wind keeps catching it and I'm half expecting it to blow away. :'(  I'm working on the theory that as these are winter peas and beans if the fleece does blow away they should be hardened off by then.

I thought that too! I have built an elaborate twig based system to lift fleece and support plants....have odd looking canapy thing now!
