Post by: Delilah on November 07, 2005, 11:27:07
When is the best time to plant either Autumn Bliss or Autumn Gold, I've cleared a spot because I thought it was right about now but visited garden centre and there are non to buy and would you believe I asked a chappy who worked there and he had no idea!

Any help much appreciated  :)

November through to Feb depending on location and soil.

I have some canes on order to replace some old ones and I am not expecting them for a couple of weeks.

I purchased from RV Rogers in Pickering, google will give you their web site.

I would not bother with Autumn Gold. Nothing wrong with the variety itself, but the raspberry beetle eggs and grubs are very noticeable and discolour the yellow fruit. And I do not want to use pesticides. Try another red variety, such as Joan J, which produces bigger fruit.

Don't know which part of "Northern england" you're in, Delillah, but there were lots in at Hayes yesterday (Leeds & Ambleside)- I wasthinking of buying some until i realised I'd left my purse at home!

I have over the years been very pleased with strawberries and cane fruits from Ken Muir - www.kenmuir.co.uk.
I cant remember how they faired value-wise but quality was good.
They sell fruit trees as well.
I had a catalogue free (usually  about £7) with my order. I guess it must have depended on order size. Its called Grow Your Own Fruit and I found it very helpfull.

Ordered mine from a local nursery/garden centre a month or so ago and was phoned last week.  Picked up 10 canes for £6.45 and very healthy looking they are too!

I bought 10 canes of Autumn Bliss from Trago in Newton Abbot for £5.99. I've planted them in a trench with lots of manure, but haven't yet cut them to ground level. I thought I'd let the plants settle first. When should I cut them down please? They are strong, healthy plants showing quite a bit of green; probably due to the extremely mild weather here in the south-west.

Shame Jill, it would rather put the cost up coming out that far!

Yours are autumn fruiting, which normally get cut down after fruiting, about now, but I'd leave them for the first year, it makes for a healthier plant long term.

Thanks Jenny. I didn't really want to cut off the green bits :) I now have ten canes of Malling Jewel which were planted last Spring and the ten of Autumn Bliss, so I'm looking forward to my first harvest of the former next summer - and maybe a few from the recently planted ones later in the year.

Our raspberry canes were delivered at the end of last week, and we planted them over the weekend (lucky with the weather, too  :) ).  The autumn raspberries that we chose are "Allgold", supposedly very similar to Autumn Bliss, but with a yellower colour.

We were just lucky, one friend strongly recommended Autumn Bliss and them another friend said did I want some newish shoots. I've just planted 24 canes!!

Very good raspberries and a damned sight cheaper than Polka which I wanted to try!! Though it may be an extra year before we see results.
