Title: Rosehips
Post by: jellywelly on October 31, 2005, 21:39:05
Just wondered if anyone had grown roses for their hips rather than their flowers.  I want to plant some in the garden but I'm not sure about the best variety to use.

Cheers

Rugosas have massive hips, I used to use them for wine.

Just remember that if you can grow them from seed then the birds will take great delight in sowing even more for you. ALL OVER YOUR ALLOTMENT and everyone else's too. Believe me, we weed out roses by the hundreds from the hedgerow ones around us.

Thanks for the replies, it looks like a rubosa or dogrose would be the best way to go.

I was hoping to be able to plant one in the garden but there's nowhere for it to go as they are quite vigorous, so I will have to put the idea on hold for the moment and maybe give it more thought when I get an allotment.
