My youngest sprog has recently departed for uni and is staying in catered halls. She has always has a healthy appetite but has never really got into vegetables - but I got a letter from her yesterday and she said "I never thought that I would say this, but I really miss the vegetables".
I love my daughter - one of the nicest thing she's said. ;D Makes it all worth while.

Home cooking was one of the things I missed when I left to go to college. One can only live so long on chips and cheese on toast ... although when I was a student these were a staple diet, along with baked beans. The cheapest meal in the college refectory was chips with gravy, and a bowl of custard, because there was no charge for gravy and custard. Fortunately, my apprentice wages were enough to sustain me through college, because I didnt have a grant, and my parents didnt have any money either.
Sounds like you daughter will do ok Alan!

Students aren't daft and they know that the staple foods are the cheapest and it just so happens are the healthiest but that's not the prime mover. Beer money is the be all and end all so they buy the cheapest grub so they can buy more beer ;D Spuds, pasta. onions, carrots and baked beans are the cheap but healthy so they don't fare too badly. Where my niece and son were the shop keeper used to make up a daily recipe (healthy) and post it on the wall and then sell the ingredients very cheap, eg lasagne, spag bol, curry etc
That seemed to work very well as they didn't have to think about what to have or buy for dinner :)
When I was a student, I had no idea how to cook, so it was pretty much trial and error. I wonder how many students simply lack the skills? One of the girls just won't learn, and is always buying pizzas etc. rather than eating 'proper' food, the other is quite domesticated.
Love my veg, but have to say, the thought of chips and gravy.......lovely!! Coat on...sorry!! Slipped there for a min.. ;D :)
Yup chips and gravy is nice, but every single day ...
Disagree on the beer money Wardy, my budget allowed me to buy 4 pints a week, so ended up down the pub at weekends only.

i got a part-time job in a hotel...free food, chef cooked!
I have been a veggie since I was 17 so have always cooked veggies. I also always found that cooking with fresh seasonal ingredients was cheaper. I could write a book on 1001 things to do with a potato. I lived in Leicester though so there was always plenty of exciting (and still cheap) ingredients to make sure that eating was never boring.
What a lovely story Alan. :)
Did your daughter eat vegetables when she was very young? I can't get my son to eat anything other than potatoes and carrots. He'll only eat carrots raw. Oh sometimes I can put a few peas on his plate. I find it really strange as I ate everything fruit and veg wise when I was a kiddie. Except beetroot and pears. I still don't eat those!
Hey Derek,it was a different era when you were a student! :P :D All students I knew spent most of their dosh on booze and ate tomato sauce sarnies ! They had big bank loans too.
My son got a job at a very posh golf club and got his food and drinks free. Funnily enough he worked there 7 days a week and didn't get a degree >:(
My niece got a job as the guide for students and prospective parents and got paid in food vouchers
My son goes to Leeds uni and gets his veg at knockdown prices after 4pm on Saturdays at the market, then makes industrial quantitites of whatever. A chip off the old block! ;D ;D ;D
