After taking on a new plot. and cutting down bushes and hedges, we are hoping to have a fire on 'bonfire' night, hoping that neighbours have no reason to complain. My neighbouring lottie holder is going to do the same and we are hoping to get together and have one fire.
Can anyone think of any pitfalls, when having a fire on an allotment. So far I can think of,
Not have fire too close to existing hedges.
Have bucket of water handy/ hose pipe connected to water tap , just in case!

The wood ash thats left, can it go straight onto the allotment.
I could make charcoal, no, I'm getting too carried away with myself, especially after watching that program, Tales from the Green Valley.

yes the ash can go on the lottie. however i usely break it down a bit more with a spade as if not it stays in little bits of charcoal and can be a bit of a pain.
Also the ash is alkaline so watch your pH levels. i pile mine up behind the greenhosue until i need it.
We had a big cleaar up on the site this weekend with work partys cutting hedges ect and have a lovely bonfire to have on the 5th and we have food and watch everyone elses fireworks ;D
We always make sure we dont start our fires till after 7pm and check no wild life has sneaked into the pile before you light it, we tend to get frogs hiding in there !!
there are ususally a lot of fire works going on around our area, with a fireworks display in the local park. With luck we will have a great fire and a free fireworks display.
We will watch out for the wild life, and will check before it gets lit.
When I was a child, the whole street would get together and have a fire. With lots of food and stuff. It was a time when you got to know your neighbours and often only saw them once a year. We would spend the next day looking for unspent fireworks. This was at a time when there was spare land to have the fires, before further housing was built. How times have changed.

Oh, you lot are lucky - we are abolsutely forbidden to have fires of any kind on our allotment site - tho a few people do manage very wee fires to get ash ;) Local Council put on big fireworks displays which are usually pretty well sold out in advance but they have been cancelled a few times due to bad weather so then you lose your money and they are not cheap.
Me, oh an dog will be on lotty on bonfire night as we use the event as an excuse to have a fire. We're going to trim the hedge before the big day. I'm going to make some curried pumpkin soup and take some lagers etc. My lotty neighbours will be up there as well as they are like big kids with a bonfire :) She reduces everything to sticks so no piece of wood is safe ;D
usually have fireworks at our house, the big ones, but our garden is very small and it cna get a bit dangerous and the garden getrs wrecked. so this year its at my uncles and the lottie, next to each other. so we should have a good night
aslong as people stay away from my greenhosue that is!!
