Title: Pruning apple trees
Post by: Diana on October 21, 2005, 10:56:22
OK, really thick question

I've got an old Bramley in desparate need of care. How far do I prune it back?

If anyone says "to a leaf bud" or "to a flower bud" or "to where next year's crop will be" please can they describe what I'm looking for.

Told you it was a thick one!

D :)

Hi Diana

There's an article on BBC Gardening covering the pruning of apple & pear trees

Diana       I got a catalogue from Deacons on the Isle of Wight and they go into some detail about pruning in it

I have loads of old fruit trees and have pruned them all but my fruit is poor quality.  I keep them as I like the look of the old gnarled trees in my walled garden  :)

I pruned out dead branches and any branches which were crossing over each other.  I wasn't radical though as I was scared of killing it.  On the wounds I put some proper stuff on - It's green gunk called Arbrex I think  :)
