Title: Sollya
Post by: Val on October 18, 2005, 10:11:59
Does anyone have one? The books tell me its not hardy but it doesn't say anything about it on the label. Its a lovely bluebell climber but what are the chances of it overwintering?

Val - I never had any problem with it overwintering when I was in Surrey (near Wisley, quite a few late and v harsh frosts)- depends how protected your garden is. You may well be fine with it in Kent but i haven't tried it here myself.

Val, I don't have one, but a lady I garden for does. It's survived 2 winters outside very well, and is beautiful, now about 8 ft tall! I'd love one! But it is grown against a south facing wall. I live in Sufffolk by the way. Lottie

;D no, no please anything but that, I've spent a lifetime trying to get rid of small blondes, even small brunettes, I think they took the spray off the market, I'm still left with 2 brunettes but they've grown so much, digging them out doesn't work neither does mulching, somehow they fight their way through.I've taken the cuttings, fingers crossed now. ;D

I've found them quite beautiful and managable when young, but after you've grown them for 15 years or so they need experienced and expert care. Don't whatever you do let them self seed, the whole nightmare starts again.

OMG do you mean they breed !!!!!!!!!!!

Yes they do breed but you have to go through a time of hiding in the beds and you think they've finally gone and they pop up one day with lots of seedlings, The worse time is when they turn into completely different plants, you wouldn't think they were the same species, strange sounds come from them and they don't flower all day but show strange signs of life at night, keep the kitchen door locked they invade the food cupboards and you only know in the morning.Such weird vegetation grows from the top, sometimes in different colours, I'm still wondering if I've done the right thing in planting them, they are so difficult to get rid of.

I hope you realise that this plant is a nuisance weed and a prolific spreader in it's native Oz and with global warming taking off you are assisting another unwanted import along with parakeets, parrot's feather and Fosters.......plus a few sulky cricketers.......... ;D ;D ;D

Self sewn seedlings?  Stick to knitting old fruit..... ;D ;D ;D

Must admit I've never grown it but looked it up on the net, saw a wind up potential and as it was you.........

To answer your first question, my old RHS encyclo says they are hardy down to 0degC which isn't much frost so taking cuttings seems a wise move or perhaps there are some suckers you can separate and pot up.  Have fun.

;DBetter pot this sucker up...I answered too quickly, never looked at the name, should have known ::) ;D..I've only just planted it, I could've been out there digging and puffing trying to stuff it into a pot, don't forget its nearly halloween, if you see strange shapes flying over those valley's be afraid, be very afraid, someone might get stuffed into a pot and it won't be my plant..
