Title: Prague
Post by: kentishchloe on October 17, 2005, 14:23:01
After reading everyone's fantastic ideas about places to visit in Cornwall, perhaps y'all can help me (us) with this one... We're taking the boy (will be 14 months) to Prague third week of November - staying in an appartment near Wenceslas   Sq.

Anyone been? Where's good to visit? Good places to eat? Thanks in advance,

Chloe

Prague is fab. Went a couple of years back with the Mrs, in February. Best city break we've ever been on. We had bright sunny weather (but very cold - wrap up warm, it can be a windy place).

The Eyewitness Travel Guide (by DK) is the best, IMHO. Lots of great pictures too.

Everything about the old town is good - just about every street has something to see. Lots of statuary on the corners of almost every building, great shops, amazing churches (one, I can't remember which, is entirely decorated inside in pink marble - it's just bonkers!)

Get a travel pass (from newsagents etc) that lets you use the metro/trams etc for a fixed price. The metro is fast and clean, and the trams are great fun.

Head across the river (the 'Karlov' bridge is a fantastic sight in itself) and into the park up on the hill - the travel pass lets you go on the funicular railway. You can climb the Eiffel Tower lookalike (it's much smaller) at the top of the hill - a bit breezy but great views. The castle and surrounding environs are pretty amazing too.

Oh, and one place we discovered - cross the bridge to the castle side of the river, then head down the steps on the left. Some great little back streets to wander around - try and find the shop selling spices - it's like stepping back in time as you go through the door - the little old lady weighs most things out from the jars on the shelves, and enters everything into a ledger by hand! We got some fabulous "soft" goulash mix that was just divine. I hope she's still there.

I hope you get good weather (lots of beer cellars etc to retire into if not!) and have a fantastic time!
