???hello all, im a total novice to all this allotment malarky and really enjoying it. I have 2 small children, 2 & 3 years old and went into this to encourage their vegatable eating. But i really am clueless, i have been gathering information from fellow lotties, but all very different replies. I would really like to know what i should be doing right now, and what can i plant now. thanx

Hello,

I'm new to all this too but you should be getting the beds ready for next year by digging over. Putting in manure but not where your going to grown roots veg. Most people who have a allotment for the first time its all over grown so getting the brambles down and seeing the ground is the first step.

We can see out ground now and one bed is ready for my onion sets to go in and garlic. Broad beans can go in now too.

Hope you all enjoy it, my little lad does running over the bed what has just been dug.

RR

Hey Karrot and welcome! Though was bit concerned when saw Newbie alert!! LOL! Enjoy plot and ask away!!! Need Wardy to explain her non dig method, bless...! I'm now covering areas I know I won't get too now, planting broad beans today, have just done onion sets and garlic, attempting last go at spinache, peas? Put brassicas in few weeks back, don't think it's too laste for plug plants...OK thinking out loud now, could end up mumbling in bit..so off I go!!! Main thing..have fun!! Lottie  ;D ;D ;D

QuoteI would really like to know what i should be doing right now, and what can i plant now.

Fruit trees, fruit trees, fruit trees.

If only I'd known this when I'd started out I'd be sorted for organic apples and pears etc. instead of paying £2 a bag in Tescos for the same thing flown all the way from New Zealand which defeats the whole purpose of the exercise in the first place. I give in! Grrrrr!!!  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Oh yeah, and don't forget to stay positive! ;)

good luck karot! just do a bit at a time, keep up the bits you've done (weeding) and get something in now (brad beans. garlic) - it's great to see quick results - and this is an excellent site, you'll pick up lots of tips!

Hello Karrot  :)
Do the work little and often (says she who has spent the entire weekend on the plot...) and have lots of fun!
