Hi All
Just a couple of possible daft questions!!
1 - whats the best way to sow carrot seed as they're so small!!
2. - I'm considering growing some carrots in pots in my greenhouse as I don't have a veg patch, just flower beds. Just thought I'd do it for a bit of interest and I think the tops would look ok when mingled with flowers! (Ok! not at this time of year :D :D ) would I be wasting my time?? the GH is unheated!!
Thanks KevB
You can mix them with sand and then sow them and then the sandy colour shows up against the soil or compost so you can see where you've sown. The sand just acts as a carrier.
I grow carrots mixed with a little nigella seed. The foliage is practically identical to carrot foliage but nigella I think gives off an oniony scent to deter nasties. Nigella is black onion seed I believe. I use nigella Jekyll blue which looks very pretty
Carrots will grow in pots or your flowerbeds but I don't think I'd grow them in the greenhouse, unheated or otherwise, as it would get too hot on sunny days. They'll grow fine outdoors in pots or boxes on the patio. I used to grow mine in the flowerbeds with the flowers
Oooooohhhh that sounds very girly Wardy. I like the idea of that. It might take the site sec's mind off the weeds. He'd be dazled by the pretties.
Is this the same Nigella seed which is nice in curries?
looks the same to me ;D This is my link a bord raised bed with carrots, onions, beetroot, spring onions and love in a mist 'Jekyll Blue' (aka nigella) all growing together in an effort to see off the carrot fly. The fleece which was going over the whole thing blew away so I thought s o d it and anyway needn't have worried as the carrots were great :)

Tee hee. The bins don't stop at the square one on the left, they keep going - two more to the left and a wooden pallet one on the right, and there's the wooden leaf mould bin there as well
Yep everything in there grew very well, the flowers are actually only round the edges :)
