Stilton brings back amusing memories. When we lived overseas we bought mother in law a "proper" stilton for her to try, wrapped it, put it under her tree and her bl**dy poodles ate it! ;D ;D Ah Christmas, sick dogs and stiltons! Sorry Tim off track!
Many moons ago, B.C., I used to work in St James' Square, just around the corner from Fortnums and the glorious cheese emporium, Paxton Whitfields. For this girlie, there was nothing nicer than spending a lunch hour wandering around F&M, buying the occassional delight, then taking finger sandwiches, a pot of earl grey and a pastry before heading back to the working grind. Wow, those were the days! There was a Russian restaurant just of Berkeley Square called Kaspias where I used to buy my mum and tin of Beluga to start our Christmas day off properly! Memories.........
My very first job was in Albemarle Street, off Piccadilly, just up from F&M. Loved to browse around the food hall during lunch hours, that is, when I wasn't admiring the paintings at the RA, buying a new hockey stick from Lillywhites or dining at Langan's ;). Back then Peter Langan was still alive, and Michael Caine was still part owner with Richard Shepherd. F&M: synonymous with Earl Grey, Stilton and Port. As EJ says, memories...
I received a Christmas hamper from F & M last year and I've sadly never been more dissapointed. The champagne was "alright" the preserves and chocolates were pretty rubbish, in fact the only good thing about it was the actual hamper it came in and a few of the nice tins. And no cheese!
