Title: I don't believe it.
Post by: Bionic Wellies on October 13, 2005, 07:50:29
Its Thursday 13/Oct/2005 (unless I nodded off for a couple of months) and this morning whilst coming into Waterloo station I was accosted by a set of illumunated Christmas decorations!!!!!!!!!!!

There is still nearly a quarter of the year left before Christmas!

Saturday 17 th September went to buy some daff bulbs and our local Garden Centre had been converted to a Christmas Wonderland!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! COULDN,T BELIEVE IT!!!

Don't get me wrong coz I love Chrimble just not in Sept or October, and not really until the end of November.

Christmas does not have to be elaborate or expensive to be enjoyed, the advertising and comercialisation of Christmas drives me potty, but I think I might be starting to touch on a controvercial subject here!

Many people also lead such busy lives that they feel the need to start Christmas shopping early in order to get everything done!!!!!!!!!My attitude is take it easy and if it doesn,t  get done WHO CARES!!!! Just enjoy the festive season during the season not 3 months prior.

And as soon as they clear the xmas crap away they start stocking the shelves with Easter eggs.  I Remember when I wasa kid (and it wasn't so long ago, easy now) that a trip to Woolies just before Christmas was great because you were mentally writing your wish list as mum & dad dragged you round buying that super thin wrapping paper to wrap cousin's gifts in.  Now Woolies looks like a Christmas Bazaar 10 months of the year.  No wonder I can't get enthused about it anymore - it's such a shame.  The only thing I do enjoy it the carols by candlelight that we take the cubs to

Asda have been decking the halls with bows of holly for weeks now, and you could buy Christmas cakes and mince pies whilst the kids were off school in the summer holidays!

I am Christmas crrrrrazy, but refuse to focus on it until after my birthday in November.

I love Christmas time but I don't want it shoved in my face until after November. I have 5 family birthdays in November, the last one being on the 29th.

I HAVE to ignore it until then...but... I can't help having a peek at all those glittery sparkly things, my eyes widen, a tiny inner part of my heart skips , I stare in childlike wonder and am transported back to being 7 in the toy department of Fenwick's in Newcastle, where all I longed for was a little purple shiny saxophone. Then my thoughts darken,I start to recall  the glass case in the wall , the animated puppets with the witch puppet that scared me to death...I knew it was there but I couldn't not look,it drew me in and I couldn't pull away.  Suddenly I snap out of my dreamlike state shudder and dismiss the Christmas decorations as being much to early, removing myself to the solace of a coffee and a cake. That witch puppet still frightens the life out of me.

I was in Fenwicks a couple of days ago Heldi and they were putting up the stores Christmas decorations then.  They too have a full array of all the Christmas goodies.  All our local high street shops are well geared up too.  I know it is far too early, but I can't help a little frisson of excitement - I love Christmas so much!

The biggie for me is wondering what Fenwicks will have as their theme in their Christmas windows.  It is always lovely, except one year when they featured some Christmas Aliens.   :o ;D  I have to confess I have already bought some Traidcraft Christmas cards.  :-[ :) busy_lizzie

Our shop has cleared away all garden stuff to make room for mince pies and Christmas pud.  Pity that as I love plum duff but if I start eating it now I don't think I'll be able to stop.  Bring back the slug pellets  ;D

Baggy - super thin Christmas paper for cousins here too  ;D

The festive season is not allowed to arrive in our house before December 14th.  That way I havea week of my birthday cards being up (pleeeeeze no 'Happy December birthday jobs) and not being out jostled by the tinsel and glitter.  I have a right to be selfish on that one I feel.  Also my mum died when the xmas decs were up - 12th night I think - so the less time I am invaded the better.  I am not bah humbug, I just like the traditional stuff and not the commercial money grabbing ideas.  Ok, so these houses look very pretty with their icicle lights and santas etc but to be honest I would feel guilty about lighting up my guttering when I can't see it myself.  If I sound like a grouch it's because I am housebound with pnuemonia ans pluerosy.  Poor, delicate little me.  Always said I was a princess.

Oh dear Baggy.  Pleurisy, pneumonia!  Flamin eck  :o  Bet you can't console yourself with brandy either if you're on anti wotsits.  Poor you  :(  Anyway while you're off it will give you plenty of time to flick through the seed catalogues and plan for next year's growing season.  Also you'll be able all next week to sit in front of the telly (every afternoon) to watch this new allotment programme that's starting  :)

Take care and get well soon  :)

Are you suitably sympathetic to my plight ?  I hate being ill.  I was supposed to be going to the theatre tomorrow night but have been told i am not allowed to sneak out.  Not even with me fermal vest ?  Set sky+ for next week.  Cheers Wardy.  I feel like a complete fraud as on Mon I didn't even have the energy to take my epi tablets or brush my teeth.  Thank goodness for oh he has run around mopping my brow and showering me off when i didnt have the energy to stand up (running 105 temp) and took 2 days off to look after me.  'How would you cope if you had kikds?' said sis.  I'd give them to her, that's how.

Poor you Baggy! I am so sorry you are ill.  Nasty having pneumonia/pleurisy, very unpleasant!  You just stay in the warmth and coddle (Geordie word) yourself.  Hope you start to feel much better soon.   :) busy_lizzie

Our local Tesco store was already at it early September !

And when I queried the staff at Martins (newspapers and post office) as to why they were displaying Christmas puddings and crackers on 3rd September, they could give me no response.

It's all to do with who will sell most at the earliest date !   :-X :(

The christmas window displays are something I approve of within reason, not the million pound budget affairs.  It's when you enter Boots in october and are assaulted by perfume spraying assisstants ans piped jingle bells type music.
Thanks for the get well wishes guys

Derek the puppets were there all year round.

Busy Liz. Fenwicks toy department isn't a patch on how it used to be is it.  It used to be the whole floor. I'm sure my son doesn't get the same, almost magical, experience that I used to. Maybe it's because of the toys themselves?  I remember the aliens window and also a jungle one which I wasn't impressed with at all.

Baggy I'm sorry you are so poorly. You look after yourself. If I find myself drawn to the sparkly things I will stop myself and think of you and your birthday cards !

Well I am happy to be the forum's scrooge for this year and go round saying bah! humbug! to all and sundry !  ;D Cos Christmas does my head in bigtime. Guess I will admit to being a softie and romantic in other areas, but not for the festive season.

But I will say bah humbug in a pleasant way ok?

In one of the local garden centres last year they had a 6 foot animated Homer Simpson dropping his keks and flashing his arse accompanied by a merry ho ho ho. Must admit I'm quite looking forward to that coming back... ;D

However, I noticed in the Disney store in Bluewater yesterday they've hit upon a novel marketing ploy - they've got toys from the Nightmare Before Xmas movie (the clue's in the title...) - for Halloween! I reckon they've cleverly managed to kill two birds with one stone there!

Cheers,
Rob ;)

Well guys, after nearly a week of anti-botiks I think I am almost fixed.  Still can't go outside without hacking my guts up but a million percent improvement on last weekend.  I am no longer a miserable old cow (albeit I am going stir crazy at not being allowedout to play on lotty) and I think by next weekend I will be back on form.  Thanks for the kind words.  I will be plaguing the board with posts next week as I will be housebound so please bear with me.

Baggy I'm sorry, I succumbed to the glittery things yesterday!  I just had to look..it was my 2 year that made me do it !!!  Bought a couple of things but don't worry, they were for birthdays and not Christmas related...though somehow a tiny fairy managed to get into my basket. Don't know how  ::)   ;D

Hope you are feeling stacks better!

My hubby's is the 20th, as was my Nana's. My Grandad was the 18th.  So there's always a very careful separation of the two... birthday cards go on the telly, Christmas cards on the mantelpiece and bookshelves.

My mum's was on the 17th and hubby's on the 20th.  My old man likes lots of pressies, he loves unwrapping them and it drives me mad as I don't know how to split stuff between Christmas and his birthday.  I think this year he's getting fencing for the lotty.  I can just see me wrapping that lot  ;D
