Title: Harvesting sweetcorn
Post by: philandjan on October 11, 2005, 15:54:36
Dear fonts of all knowledge (useful and otherwise)

We have been picking cobs for the last 4-6 weeks on an as-needed basis.

How long can we leave them on the plants or should we harvest them all now? If we harvest them, what's the best way to store them?

Don't ask what varieties they are! They all looked the same at the time we planted the seeds  :-[

Freeze, and if you have plenty make a corn relish,or crab and sweetcorn soup-am drooling now so best stop :P

Freeze, :P

Cleo
Do you have to blanche them first or just pick'em, bag'em and freeze'em (he typed, hastily trying to clean up the dribble from keyboard as he thinks about crab and sweetcorn soup)  :)

For long term store - blanch.

Whatever, wrap tightly in clingfilm.

Pick when ready, RUN home and woosh into boiling water to blanch then plunge into icey water then freeze.
They reckon you should pick it and put straight into boiling water at the allotment :D
4 pots on the cooker buckets of ice, this year we used sarny boxes filled with water and frozen over night as they last longer than cubes.

Got 137 cobs this year :o :D ;D
