Title: Potato problem
Post by: chriszog on October 10, 2005, 09:07:16
Started to dig up my main crop potatos yesterday (Golden Wonder) and saw that most were covered with a brown scab type on the skin. The ones we roasted for sunday lunch were superb but will they store in that condition???
Any advice appreciated.
Regards

Lining your potato trenches, or whatever else you plant them in, with grass cuttings is supposed to prevent scab...

They should keep - although if there as bad as the one shown in the bottom left of that picture - maybe worht keeping an eye on them.

I always get a little scab on my spuds - has'nt ever effected their storage capabilities.

There is not much you can do when your potatoes get scab.

Practice crop rotation: never grow pottoes at the same spot in 4 years time.
Do not grow Cara, Estima, Pentland crown, But try Wilja, that is a resistant variety. And put in manure or compost but no lime before planting your potatoes.
