Growing you own may change how you buy fruit and vegetables
The nationwide hunt to find England's ugliest vegetable has been launched in retaliation at retailers' increasing insistence on perfect produce.
The National Trust aims to uncover the nation's bearded carrots, bent beans and bulbous potatoes in its year-long quest to prove they are just as tasty.
Winners of the competition's seven categories must be able to show how and where they grew their specimens.
Growing you own connects you with nature, said a trust spokeswoman.
"The ugly veg competition aims to discover not only the ugliest veg but also the best growing experience and is open to individuals and schools throughout England," said its food choices project officer, Elizabeth Woodward.
'Great work out'
The trust wanted to know how growing their own changed people's view of buying fruit and vegetables, she continued.
And its benefits were not only nutritional.
"An hour in the garden burns up 345 calories, half again as much as cycling," she said.
"If you don't have a school garden or one at home, have a go at growing you ugly veg in a container - it could even be an old shoe."
Individual winners in each category stand to win a veg box for a year, while runners-up will be awarded a compositor.
An overall winner will have a National Trust gardener for a day to advise and help them.
The closing date for entries is 1 September, 2006.

What a load of codswollop about an hours gardening burning up 345 calories. If that were true I would be slipping down the drains, instead of being as I am. ;D ;D
