Look after those Tim, as good hankies are getting impossible to find these days with the advent of tissues :(
Every year I like to buy a box of new hankies for my relatives but they are usually confined to such characters as Barbie or Superman ;D
They are posh ones Tim and I assume you don't use them if they only get washed once a year :)
Oh I just love lace hankies - I've got some of my grandmas but I wouldn't ever use them. I seem to recall that John Lewis still sell really nice lace cotton hankies, but they don't come cheap!
They are beautiful Tim, I have 2 of my Great Grandmothers Tattied tablecloths, never know how to deal with them!
Aw they are lovely,I've gone all wistful now remembering my Grandma's bedroom and all the lacey things.
I have a beautiful lace tray cloth so old. it was left to me many years ago and i have never used it i wash it on the odd occasion, its so lovely, scared i shall spoil it daft i suppose, they are meant to be used.
We live in such a disposable society now, and forget that people did once use those lovely lacey hankies. I remember it was a favourite Christmas present when I was little, to give people pretty hankies. busy_lizzie
I have bedding and tableclothes from my grandma. Beautiful. Funny how people buy people hankies but do they use them or are they stuck in a drawer and forgotten about. Ava and I are hanky fans and have a stack which drive me potty when I have to iron them all, but how wasteful using tissue!
Since trying to go ultra environmentally friendly, I've been looking everywhere for hankies - can i find them? of course not. They are beautiful. I don't think I could use ones that pretty!
I use men's plain white hankies rather than destroy my fancy lace hankies! They are all carefully ironed and kept in a special linen bag, along with the few old lace and linen table clothes I own!
I still have an embroidered hanky given to me by my Grandma, it has a little H on it and some little flowers. I've never used it. I've always just liked to look at it! I also have one of my Dad's hankies. I call it the magic hanky. whenever my son has had earache he has held the magic hanky to his ear and Grandad up in heaven has helped him get better. It seems to work!
I remember my Grandma having all those lacey things on her dressing table along with her perfume bottles, hairbrushes and handheld mirror.
Lovely memories Heldi. Loved the one about the magic hanky. I got some of the cologne 4711 (does anyone remember that) off an elderly friend a lot of years ago, and when the children were little I used to put a few drops on a hanky and put it on their foreheads if they had a headache or were under the weather, and that used to work like magic too. To this day my daughter says when she smells that smell it seems very comforting to her. :) busy_lizzie
My husband is a great hankie man, always at least 1 folded up in his pocket. Those ones are beautiful Tim.
We don't have a magic hankie but we do have a poorly blanket crocheted by my grandma.
Beauties, Tim. I've got tray cloths and small table cloths (afternoon tea ones!) embroidered by my Mum and myself when I was younger. Happy memories. Still like a nice hanky in my bag for nights out but isn't it a nightmare if someone has left a tissue in a pocket and it gets into the wash >:(
Not so happy memories of the "cure all salt sock"! This was for sore throats or earache and she used to heat up coarse (sea) salt in a pan and pour it into one of Dad's socks which you had to hold against your ear or throat while in bed - salt seeped out every where! Preferable to the hot toddy tho - yuck!
my dad was a snuff taker so he allways had hankies, may i add not white lacey ones, much darker in colour and no lace , sadly my dad past away 6 years ago , all of his hankies were thrown away , apart from 2 that my daughter took along with his pillow and snuff box , my daughter heidi sleeps everynight with the hankies folded up inside the pillow case along with his snuff box , dont think she has ever blown her noise in it , but bless her means the world to her as it was her grandads
My OH insists on using proper hankies (and he's only 44!) I hate it and make him wash them separately from the rest of the washing. Can't bare the thought of them mingling with my clothes

I spent ages looking for some too Aqui - like Plocket I use mens ones, but if you don't mind them I found some recently in QS if you have one - otherwise I've seen mens & womens at http://www.the-owl-barn.com/ and mens at http://www.scottsofstow.co.uk/ (in both cases search for handkerchiefs).
And certainly not nappies, ani??
I too have some pretty lace hankies similar to yours Tim, which were my grandmothers and some of my Mum's, who died 6 months ago....also some really pretty embroidered ones that I had as a child - some have been used & of course washed & ironed since then ;) which I keep in pretty handkerchief sachets (I have 3, my own, my Mum's and my Gran's).....
I've also got lots of pretty dainty crocheted 'doilys' which I do use - especially on my old stripped pine furniture.....plus traycloths & small 'afternoon' cloths - some very decorative.
Now when my Dad died a year ago, I kept several of his hankies (with his initials on) and they're also kept with the other hankies....however, I do keep one handy especially for 'drying my glasses' on after washing them every morning (or more frequently if needed) as the soft cotton brings them up lovely & sparkly!!
Also remember as a child having to use the 'sore throat sock' which was one of Dad's socks wrapped around our throats (me & my brother) after having had throat & chest rubbed with camphorated oil (which you can't seem to buy now sadly) and it always seemed to help or cure!!

Vicks vapour rub is brilliant for sore throats & stuffy noses.
I used to dissolve some in a bowl of boiling water and place it under my son's cot
when he was a baby. With the bedroom door shut it filled the room full of lovely vapour
before it was his bedtime and helped him sleep.
I always make sure I have some in for winter.
Which reminds me...
Must make some elderberry cordial.
Full of Vitamin C and reputedly staves off nasty winter colds.
Gorgeous taste too!
