Ok so our local veg shop is giving us all the stuff they can't sell to put in the compost. What I would like to know is. If we leave the pips, stones and seeds on the fruit or put them in the compost bin will they grow ? I have been taking them out of any plumbs, peaches etc. There is strawberrys too but Is it ok to not bother to de-seed everything? and just chuck it in.
Thanks in advance
Joji ;)
I would just chuck them in :) Good idea to get stuff from your veg shop as you'll need plenty to keep your lotty supplied. Mind you the lotty does provide lots of foliage etc for the bins. The potato haulms are plentiful and mine are on the floor softening at the mo with all the courgette and pumpkin foliage. I'm letting it wilt a bit before trying to get it all in the bin :)
Yes, I just chuck it all in too. The peach stones appear in my compost and it is much quicker to remove them then. Most of the seeds/pips will have been destroyed by the composting process.
Tomatoes are the thing I find doesn't and I had some lovely tomatoes off the plants growing in my flower borders from tomato seeds in the compost!
I have loads of windfall apples each year and put them in whole but have never had anything frow from them.
Happy Composting!
I usually get a spud and a nastirtium or two growing out the front of mine which looks rather nice :)
I take it then mine will be full of strawberries then :-[
I had a large bag of bananas given to me today. Pleanty of potassium for the garden then lol ;D
Wardy I can't help it if I have these occasional brain waves. Things just come to me and I am usually right ( like most of us women ) ;D ;)
Yup, I turn up the odd peach stone when I turn out my compost heap, that and a load of green lip mussel shells that Tim and co told me wouldn't rot down, and do you know what.....after three years, they still come out shiney and blue!
Peach, mango and avocado stones in my heap! Wish the mangoes and avocadoes would grow and produce fruit! ;D ;D ;D
