Planning for when I get a greenhouse in the new year ;D
Have heard somewhere that if you put one of those plants in the greenhouse they help to keep the nasties down...ie:anything that is unfortunate to fly by!!
Anyone know if its either true or worth it??????
Obviously not......coat......door!!
;D
I think you would have to have several plants to make it worthwhile....and then you would have the humidity and temperature issues. I keep thinking a couple of little quails to live in there to eat the nasties...............
The quail would be eating half the plants as well emma........ would need
chick crumbs too.......nice eggs though.............nice quail too when plump
enough............ better with the italian ones they are more table size ;D ;D :o :o
I've never been able to keep them alive for longer than a few months, venus fly traps, I mean, not quails....... ::) But good luck!
i used to keep quails in my aviary , they are so sweet even breed and the babies where like little bumble bees they where tiny , i love Chinese painted quails, might even think about getting a few again . sorry katynewbie thats not no help to you
The rumour of VFT keeping nasties down is false. ;)
I grow carnivorous plant and have around 500 hundred of diffrent species and cultivars,of which the VFT is one of them ( i have around 50 VFt at the moment)
The VFT is probably the most dramatic but considered a poor insect catcher
It can suffer from nasties just as much as any other plant . It does not want high humidity so can be added to a greenhouse for effect but not for keeping your insects down.
On the other hand a sarracenia can catch several hundred insects per season and is considered a high insect catcher and will also grow very easily in a greenhouse, but be aware greenfly can attack all carnivorous plants as the plant as evolved to catch larger pray.
Some plants prefer ants others aquatic pray all can grow in a greenhouse along with your tomato's ;)
see my site for a few pics ( sorry about the pop-up though,it's not malicious or spyware .I'm too tight to buy the full version. Just click cancel on them) :-[Â Â

my sister had one years ago and swore blind it must give off a scent to attract flies.
Venus fly traps are small and only eat a few flies. If you want to get a lot, go for one of the big Sarracenias.
Great pics!! feel a bit sorry for the damsel fly 'tho :o
