Hi all,
Got our lottie towards the end of June and keen to grow something we rather over sowed turnip seeds in July. We now have a turnip mountain :o which needs fetching out as the tops are dying of and the slugs have found them!
Recipes anyone?
The only way I've ever eaten and enjoyed them is roasted. If small, put them in whole with your potatoes or chop to smaller size. Also nice cut into 1in cubes with squash, parsnip, etc.
You can dice turnip small, slice carrots, cook mash and freeze then use as a veg - my family say it is not Christmas dinner without carrot and turnip!
This should start you off:

And there's some seriously interesting ones here:

Including about 19 pickles recipes and an Amish turnip casserole.
Best of luck! Â :D Hope you like turnips.
I read in KG Magazine that they are delicious sliced and sauteed in butter with onions. That was for the Purple Top Milan and she was using red onions (the Editor that is)
Turnips are very good in lamb casseroles (Lancashire hotpot, Irish stew, navarin d'agneau) and Madhur Jaffrey does a curried turnip recipe in her first BBC book on Indian cookery. Delish.
I too was going to suggest the Turnip curry from Madhur, it is fab!
And if you like a curry, go here and type in turnip in the search engine, every recipe I have ever tried from this site has been wonderful. (thanks to Tim for pointing me in the direction ;D )
Turnips store quite well, don't they?
If you have the freezer space, you could always just chop them and blanch them. Then any time you feel like doing a recipe that could potentially involve turnips you could just throw a handful in like frozen peas.
Don't get carried away. Turnips are no good on rice crispies.
no, i always stick to parsnips with my rice crispies - i find turnips are better with porridge ;D ;D ;D
Never thought of curry! I have Madhur's books so will get reading up. Not that I have turnips yet. My first lot disappeared shortly after germination :(
DUH me! Helps if I post the link! ::)

Thanks all!
Curry and gratin (mr neeps) excellent. Blanched and frozen some for stews and soups also. Not quite sick of the sights yet but draw the line at rice crispies :-X
These are all good tips. Thanks for asking Bagpuss. My OH planted a couple of rows of little white turnips at the back of our plot and we have just ignored them. Looked the other day and we have loads, so now I will have plenty of ideas on what to do with them. :) busy_lizzie
