Title: Commercially available compost-recommendations please
Post by: MaryM on September 29, 2005, 09:57:32
Hi

I am having difficulty getting well rotted manure and my household compost bin has got a way to go.  Is there any commercially available composts that you would recommend?

i got a good amount of humus (sp?) from our local tip. our council does garden waste collections and they recycle it and then sell the compost back to he public. i paid £10 for four sacks which wasnt quite enough for all the uses i put it to, but they were sold out after march! will definately get more again this coming spring (early!).

all my plants loved it.

as for commercial, i only used the seed composts for my seedlings indoors. sorry cant help any further

There is concentrated manure available from most seed catalogues and garden centres E.G.Triple X..Organure etc. These usually come in  I think roughly a 4 stone   bag which does a large area owing to it being very concentrated.  Instructions are usually on bag . I have used them and had good results.. some of the old guys on our lottie site use nothing else but this as its easy to handle etc .one guy uses it for show stuff .

cheers Jim

I'd definitely go with the green waste project and purchase from your local tip. I buy it when I have a few pennies to spare to cover delicate little seeds like carrot or to mulch my beds. These guys need all the encouragement they can get! ::)

Mainly, ours is home grown. But then we buy in mushroom compost at £18 for a 'builder's bag' & then get a few bags of 'farmyard' at £2.50 a bag.
